Whilst quite rightly there has been much talk about the significant amounts of rainfall so far this month, but another feature has been the abundant cloud and lack of sunshine. June on average is the sunniest month for most places. This month has seen very little generally so far, we must be well below average.

Any stats to back it up - what has been the dullest June on record?

Yes, only 46.2 hours down here and we're nigh on half way through the month. Only January and March had less up to this point, this year.

31.3 hours here in the first 14 days which is 47% of average for the first two weeks.

It would have to stay this dull for the rest of the month though to be in the same league as June 2012  which had recorded 16.7 hrs by the 14th and went on to be the dullest ( and wettest ) June on record with a total of 63.7 hrs, 44% of the 30 year average.

Dullest June on record was 2016 here, recording 101 hours (49% of normal).

June 2012 was 2nd, with 118 hours.

Gosh June 2012 was dire. I'm surprised at the stats for June 2016 I don't recall it being an especially dull month. Would appreciate someone putting up stats for say the last 10 Junes so we can compare how we are doing with then. Recent Junes apart from 2012 have I think been very sunny, last year and 2017 notably so.

June 2016 was very thundery first half and a very good first half overall for very humid sunny spells for 5 days early on.

Not so here. Incredibly cloudy, a very cold start to the month, and rain throughout. Half the average sunshine and over double the average rainfall.

We've had 45 hours so far this June, just 49% of the 1981-2010 average to this point in the month.

Our dullest five Junes since 1980 are:

1987: 111hrs
2012: 115hrs
1990: 122hrs
1982: 133hrs
2016: 135hrs

Since 2000, only 2002, 2007, 2012, 2014 and 2016 have had sunshine hours below the current 1981-2010 average (184hrs), the other 14 Junes have been above this.

Its also worth noting that should this June finish with a total below average, it will be the first duller than average month since April 2018  - a run of 13 months.

Up to and including today, 71.5 hours recorded here. June 2016 saw 73.9 hours in total, so that should be beaten.

Maybe a poor June will provide a chance for more thunderstorms to develop.

June 80, 82, 87 and 2016 all had stormy periods.

Unstable air seems to be more common during a poor June, well just from my personal experience anyway.

I agree, S76; if we're hundreds of miles from where airmasses interact, our chances of seeing much in the way of worthwhile thundery activity are close to zero...1976 and 2018 were prime examples...?

We had more thunder-days, over here, in 2017 than I was able to count...

Thanks to recent days and the forecast, sunshine levels look like ending up closer to average, but still think will end up below, combined with above average rain, significantly so for some, and temps average at best, June 2019 will definately go down as a poor summer month despite some exceptional uppers forecast.

We're on 90 hours now to the 26th. If we record less than 21 hours in the remaining 4 days then it'll be the dullest June in 40 years of records.

I suspect it might slot in between 1987 and 2012 looking at the forecast, but either way in the three dullest as beating the 122hrs in 1990 looks a long shot.

Just 118 hours in London so far this month. It'll be up among the cloudiest on record surely, here's the current worst 10.

2016: 101.7 hours

2012: 118.5 hours

1990: 132.5 hours

1987: 132.9 hours

1977: 134.8 hours

1991: 135.0 hours

2007: 139.5 hours

1979: 140.3 hours

1971: 145.4 hours

1997: 151.6 hours

I suspect it might end up ahead of all on that list, as Today, tomorrow and Saturday may not be far off maximum sunshine, with the cold front arriving overnight Saturday and Sunday being cooler but still pretty sunny.

It could actually end up higher than 160 hours at this rate. Still poor, but much improved.
