And the season begins, a few sightings in UK already. @NLCalerts  #NLC2019 @NLCnet

New blog https://www.netweather.tv/weather-forecasts/news/9607-what-are-noctilucent-clouds-also-known-as-nlcs-or-polar-mesospheric-clouds-pmcs

Noctilucent clouds are rapidly spreading around the Arctic Circle. First sighted by NASA's AIM spacecraft on May 20th, small wisps of electric blue have since multiplied in areal coverage by a factor of nearly 200. SpaceWeather

It was 10 years since the greatest display of noctilucent cloud display I have ever seen and I think for many others. It was a truely remarkable display that was widely seen across the UK and other parts of Europe away from the far north.

so theres no reliable site that can tell you when/where they are happening?... see, i dont want to stop up until midnight in the random hope of seeing them, but if there was a reliable predictive site that i could check in the early evening - i would stop up.

so far ive failed to see any by just randomly waiting up, its annoying.

This shows if they are on the go above Arctic circle https://www.iap-kborn.de/en/research/department-radar-remote-sensing/current-radar-observations/oswin-mesosphere/

above Finland now , if you look at the AIM daisy charts (top right) http://aim.hamptonu.edu/ you can see how the Bright area of NLC moves about above the earth, but there is a lag with these, of several days. Anyone else have helpful charts, or just watching #NLCalerts #NLCnow?.

Following the 5 day transition cycle of the NC is a good method.....I use the http://spaceweathergallery.com/nlc_gallery.html

to look for good showings over Europe.....and there were some good sightings over Denmark and Scotland on the 4th june.......so + 5 days.

Having said that looking at the mass of NC over the pole atm.... `m sure that the next lot of high pressure over the country will give us all a chance of seeing this extraordinary display

(be aware of the 2 day lag in data.....but it gives you a rough idea where the mass of NC within it`s transition}

The current theory at http://www.spaceweather.com/

is that they are related to the lack of Sun spot activity....currently 30 spotless days

Interestingly @Weather-history posted some impressive images from 2009

and looking back at the sunspot activity this theory looks to be correct

wolfjmms.thumb.png.5154997ba196ea77221397a39abf4121.png

lack of sunspots = lack of radiation which in turn means more moisture in the upper atmosphere

Oh for a clear couple of nights

just a thought

nope.... i awoke at 2.45 and i could see nowt... maybe i was too late?

im also uncertain of how far up into the sky they are visible as ive yet to see a proper display. the photos dont really help... are they in a narrowish band on the horizon? in which case id need a clear view of the horizon. or do they appear higher in the sky?.. obvs not much higher, but say above rooftops that are 50 odd meters away...
