Very heavy narrow band of rain this morning mounted the rainfall up for the whole summer incredibly the wettest on record stand alone,was equal with 2012 a much different summer in look to this one with it seemed like the dullest summer on record,this one much sunnier.

What a lovely end to summer,far far better than the bank holiday weekend,fresh,usable,comfortable,basically perfect though the breeze may be a tad to strong for some.

By contrast, it's been typical of the last year or so (let alone the summer) that your heavy rain has faded to the occasional bit of drizzle here.  We've had barely over 50% of our average rainfall for August I think, on top of a dry July.  Combined, these two months have eradicated the surplus rainfall from June.

Another hot day tomorrow then a cooldown on the cards. September is still essentially summer here though so not counting any chickens yet.

Is it me or do cold fronts never seem to make it to the south east anymore, other than a thin band of light drizzle that doesn’t last 10 minutes, heavy rain in the north west but literally turns to nothing by the time it gets here.

Your not alone, active cold fronts pushing in from the west engaging with the hot and humid air often produced great night storms running NE, (selective memory alert lol)  also see 'decline in thunder '

Also noticed that temps do not drop that much after them either.. here on the south coast at least, a couple cooler nights but temps still nudging 20c by day, I suppose it’s still late summer

August in London was pretty decent in the end. Temperatures were 1.2c above average, with 67% of average rainfall and 98% of average sunshine.

It didn’t seem like that at times. I clearly remember many days with cloudy skies and some damp and rainy days.

The last week or so if August was very good in terms of heat and sunshine though.

Well it feels like we have switched from summer to autumn overnight.

 

Freezing cold this morning, an arctic chill to the air. Now a case of sunny intervals and blustery showers, just as forecast, and still feeling very cool for the time of year at just 13°.

It was only the 2nd August to record 200+ sun hours since 2005 (the other being 2016)!

This summer has reminded me of a warmer 2016, though June 2019 was infinitely superior to the total manure that was June 2016.

It is an interesting chart the MSI but there are a few questionable figures that are way out ,certainly in these parts even though I am outside the MSI area. I mean how on earth is 1984 listed so low when it should be second behind 1995 in fact I think there is a mistake here because it is 1995 which has the figure of 295 and not 2018. Also how did 2010 get there at 244,yes one good month the rest was cool and pants and what is 1997 doing down there with the hottest August in modern times just above 2008??,surely this chart is wrong?

Only slightly. June 2019 was cow dung, and August was only marginally better. July was the only good month this summer.

August was sunnier and drier than July, and was only slightly cooler.

August proved to be the best month of the summer here. The sunshine total of 217hrs was actually the highest here since August 1995. Both July and August topped 30C for the first time in 40 years of records. Apart from the last 10 days of July, nights were relatively cool, which shows in the mean minimum figures. There were a high number of rain days (50), but only 29 days had above 1mm and 5 days above 10mm. Only 9 days failed to reach 20C from 10th July - 31st August.

A decent summer overall for us.

although i was back in England the last 2 weeks of August (which was lovely) Here in Edmonton it was one of the coldest summers on record and the 2nd wettest on record..never got above 30c at any point and only got above 28c twice..all three summer months were 2-3c below normal.

i think one thing theyve overlooked or simply ignored..... yes its been wet, but the rains were heavy, with around 2/3 of the summer days being dry, meaning the rains that fell came in only 1/3 of the other days.

this is in contrast to say 2012 when around 2/3 of days were wet.
