Already over 300mm of rainfall for this summer up to the 14th August and there was a 3 week period in the middle when only about 8mm fell!

we had more rain here for the same period and  more than 300mm for the summer ..have to check my stats for Jun and Jul but we had something like 120mm rain in Jun and 190mm in July..guess what is raining again today and stays cool and showery rain until next Friday at least..by far the coolest dullest and wettest summer i have ever seen here.

definitely looking like summer is finished for this area, next week looking fairly pants, I'd guess broad westerly, windy, rain/showers at times 17 degrees max, then the week starting 24th washout, could be on for record breaking totals

WoW over three times as much rain as on the east coast! Looks like a horrible climate to me. Tons of rain, cold night temperatures year round, daytime temperatures not very inspiring either. Probably very cloudy as well. The summer highs are around 1 degree higher than in Tynemouth but nights are much colder and they'd be a lot more rain so the extra warmth probably wouldn't be noticed under cloudy skies. As for Tynemouth, while its chilly for most of the year, at least it doesn't rain much and the sunshine levels are reasonable. There's nothing more depressing than a gloomy wet day (like today). They can also get snow showers in winter with a cold enough easterly blowing in from off the North Sea. 

 

I was last up there back at the end of May 2018. While most of the country was having lots of warm and sunny weather, the first three days was thick fog and temps struggling to get above 13/14°C. There was also a very cold wind coming off the North Sea. Must be absolutely brutal in winter.

It's very cool yes, but it has similar sunshine/rainfall levels to many parts of the south east, which I think is quite impressive really. And it can get snow in winter with an easterly wind. London heat is too hot for many people anyway.

In contrast to high rainfall in the north-west, East Anglia stays dry.  We've had only light rain from the cold front today, and most precipitation this past couple of years that's come anywhere near us has either swung away north or just weakened to almost nothing.  If this autumn stays dry, the River Cam (the one that flows through Cambridge) might actually completely dry up, which is ridiculous.  I fully expect this area to classify as a desert by 2025 at this rate.

Off on holiday for a week to Barmouth in Wales tomorrow. Hopefully the weather will be better there. Checked the forecast and its looks decent and mainly dry, if a bit cool and windy.

Yes we get rain, shed loads of it, keeps the lakes and tarns full and the trees lush!

It's not that bad climate wise, and there's 20 million plus folk a year visiting, although thats a double edged sword!

Well the streak of bad August's continue. It is now 16 in a row (arguably) and this maybe one of the most dire of the lot. Almost completely devoid of any real warmth or sunshine. I also seriously can't understand the comments of it being dry in  East Anglia. I am in Haverhill, Suffolk, and it has been raining non stop for nearly 24 hours. Wednesday also rained for over 12 hours, and much of last week was very wet also. It has been very very wet, overcast and cool. It has also been very windy. Infact, I struggle to remember the last day without high wind.

I honestly feel this maybe one of the worst August's since 2003, if not the worst.

Met Office did a video about it not long ago and they put it down to a decadal cycle of the NAO (similar in the 60’s apparently).

Also worth saying that 09, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18 all had two reasonable months so the sentiment is being overdone.

Not so sure about that. I think August 2017 will take some beating. That said, it's rained loads here this last week, so I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out wetter than August 2017.

 

Though CET-wise we are still above August 2017 but that's mainly down to the warm start.

 

On the bright side however, August 2017 was (partly) rescued by a nice a nice BH weekend, and it looks like it could be a repeat performance this year, we shall see.

what models are you looking at?... its clearly an improving picture towards next weekend and with a good chance of some very warm conditions fri/sat, even IF it turns thundery on sunday/monday its still well in line with 'summer' like weather.

I remember the summer of 1959, it was a cracking one.  Christmas '59 was also remarkably mild.

Maybe we were spoilt with having two here from the 70s and 3 in the 80s ,only the 50s have two others in the list,all the other decades having one and the 20s,60s and naughties being devoid.The few poor summers in the 80s we got were more than made up for it here,what joys to have that decade again!
