Looking at the map of unofficial stations right now, the record could go anywhere. There's 38C plus widely between London and The Wash, and also into Kent (did I hear someone say Gravesend...). Just needs a reporting station in the right position.

Are there actually any official stations in Kent anymore, at least anywhere near Gravesend?

If they round to the nearest odd number, why is Cambridge reporting 38?

Could Cambridge airport be used as an official station for a record breaking temperature?

I can confirm it’s just about clouded over at Heathrow now although amazing to to experience 100f temps here. Had some good strong sun for a period up to now.

Whatever the temperature here it won’t be going any higher, the cloud has finally arrived! I think we’ve squeezed every drop we could out....Kent looks good though?

Think it will just fall short. Quite unbelievable to be honest considering we had hotter upper air than 2003 and it is at the optimum time of year. Things couldn’t have been lined up better. But that’s that damn cloud for you. Once again it is a party pooper.

Still a small chance that Kent may just squeeze it, but unlikely as it’s 4pm.

There is also a chance it may have already been broken but not announced.

Gut feeling is though that it’s just short

I assume the rounding is only when the temperature lies on X.5C. So it reading as 38C in Cambridge means it's at least 37.6C

That would be my logic too, but the 15:50 METAR is still 38 so I don't think Cambridge is going to beat the record sadly

Sorry that seems to be the highest Edinburgh has ever recorded, mis-read the post!

No.2 and by some distance as well. Certainly a very hot day, got to think we will be getting more days like these as global temperatures elevate over the next decade or two.

Unless we somehow still gain another .5c I think we can safely say the all time record is safe for now

Suspect we will be struggling to find a higher temperature now.

Pretty close to the record though despite fairly considerable cloud cover at times and showery outbreaks, impressive effort for sure and we did manage to get that 100f for just the 2nd time!

For the life of me I can't understand how people can be happy of this weather, or root for it. It's unbearable, everybody (people, animals, plants) is suffering... It's a torture honestly.

Can't wait for the day after tomorrow to come. Enough of this crap!

Different people like different types of weather and some are weather enthusiasts who like records and statistics. Get over it. Sick of being told I'm mad for liking it and even being made to feel guilty.

Yes. Amazing day but very very unfortunate to be honest.

The Arpege was bang on with 40c in my opinion. But the unexpected cloud knocked off a degree or two.

Couldn’t write it

Shame we're likely to see more heatwaves like this in the future as the climate continues to warm.

Well, not really. The Arpege, like many others models, would take cloud in to account.
