Hopefully...but really not sure, it's only weather (but it's catching the headlines though).

Exactly. We’re all on here for the same reason - we love weather. With a multitude of likes and dislikes within that. No one is wrong for liking (or disliking) something.

Cloud and a couple of showers moving into the London area now. Will put a temporary brake on temperatures rising, however there are good breaks in that cloud showing so hopefully won’t be a 2015 repeat.

Do you think we can still hit 38C around London?

If anything is going to scupper the all time record it’s this cloud and showers now. Poor timing if it turns out to be the case.

Cambridge the prime spot as it’s that bit further north and has more time before the cloud arrives.

I wish the availability of the data that we pay for with our taxes wasn't so intermittent.

It's hot enough out there without the added 'heat' in here. Please keep it civil and report any issues to us rather than sniping.

Quite a large gap now opening up between the line of showers over London and to the SW of it, as this area of lower cloud cover (though NOT 100% clear for sure!) I think we will probably have another run at the record over the next 90 minutes or so in W London providing nothing unexpected bubbles up.

If it doesn't break by then, then I suspect we will be out of luck.

I suspect the cloud has scuppered it. There is even some cloud near Cambridge now. Not much, but hides the sun occasionally.

I actually made a joke the other day that the cloud would arrive at 2-3pm and ruin the chances. Never wished for it to be right.

Very very annoying indeed and typical Britain. Why couldn’t it of held out for another hour or two

I suspect Cambridge won’t get hot enough to surpass 38.5c

Think the clouds ruined it in London

Yeah, it’s done.

Wouldn’t have enough time to recover

Not surprising, given the convective line was basically right on top of it at 2.50pm, of course with extra cloud cover and rain nearby it was going to be dropping...I'm impressed it hasn't dropped more, Gatwick dropped 3c during that band for example!

Suspect the 3.20pm will be back upto 37c, then the run for 38.5 really begins as it enters an area of somewhat less cloud cover pushing into Surrey at the moment.

In the sunnier slot and temperatures now at the highest point all day, just a little north of 35.

Do you think there’ll be enough time? Shower here now in N London.

Local stations around Cambridge between 38C and 40C right now.

I wouldn't be shocked if they are holding back on announcing any record, simply due to quality checks, etc.

Still we will see, as you say many stations above 38c in that region now.

Well, if I end up with egg on my face I would not mind accepting it.

To break the all time record in or near Cambridge would be amazing to say the least.

Yeah there is enough time, temperatures can rebound very rapidly from showers with the atmoshpere this hot.

IF Heathrow hasn't recovered at least to some extent by the next recording, then we may have to concede its out of the race, but still there for the moment. Cambridge and surrounding region clearly also very much in the game.

Another area with lots of 38s / 39s / 40s is North Kent. No convection in this area either. Did anyone find out if the station that broke the record in 2003 is still there?

A staggering chart of local weather stations right now!!
