Keep calm would be my advice, excitement and that heat are not a good mix.

Suspect the July record is probably just minutes from falling, as the min it must by 36.5c for it to be rounded to 37c and that was recorded at 1.20pm,

All time record probably quite readily do able for Cambridge now...as it is for W.London hotspots.

Plenty of 35.5-36.5c temps being recorded around the Heathrow area as well at the moment, so Heathrow probably mighty close to the record as well now for July.

Wow this really is an amazing thread today, some panicking over whether the heat records go, others about how long it's been since we had a bad winter!! Great stuff all the same.

Cambridge showing up as 37c on the Live list, however confirmation from the Met of what exactly that is would be nice. Could still be 36.5c rounded up.

I’d describe it as a letdown if it only reached 28 and fell. I know people want extremes but current temps of 35-36 are groundbreaking enough for this day to not be considered a letdown

Highs of 35-36’C won’t have people talking about this event for years to come. It would just be one of several very hot spells in the history of recorded UK climatology.

Record breaking temperatures would have today going down in history.

EVen if it is 36.5, the July record is literally within touching distance and will 100% fall, and its just 2c shy with still likely 2-3hrs of solid sunshine likely in that region.

Good old Heathrow.

Suspect is has about 1 1/2 hours before the cloud rolls in.

No its my home office - only a portable one but still 40kg so have got to carry it up to the bedroom later which will not be fun in this heat.

Garden weather station is reporting 38 which is the highest I've ever known it. It always over reads a bit in sunny weather so I'm hopeful it'll nudge 40

NEW record for July at Heathrow, suspect Cambridge is literally just a smidge behind as well.

Going to be a close call as to whether we get past 38.5c before the showers move into the area along with the higher level of cloud cover. I still suspect a low 39c is the most likely outcome.

Also impressive round of showers have developed near Luton, probably along the line of the previous showers.

It’s a bit depressing that’s it’s always Heathrow. It’s what I chose in the competition as you just know it’s the form horse. My 37.6c guess could Ben on the low side though!

I think we’ve got an hour before the big cloudband rolls in now, so perhaps we might lose an hour of heating.....what does the rest of today hold. Some small cloud patches in the sky here now but nothing to dent the temperatures yet.

There are large breaks in the cloud though showing up.

Yeah, you couldn't write it. If held off for one more hour, I think 40c would have been reached. Probably 38.7-39.2 as a final figure. Still amazing, but the cloud scuppers the show once again.

Such a shame there is no official thermometer in Leeds. According to university weather station, we are close to the 3rd Aug 1990 record of 34.4°C.

It says 34.5C as the top temp for today now. Reliable amateur stations around here are reporting similar.

Be a shame if we don’t break the all time record today, but at least we have the July record as a consolation!
