Yes, that day is comfortably the holder of the lowest July maximum temp on record here at 12.8C.

The rainfall quantities here in June haven't been too bad so far at 43.8mm. June and July 2018 managed just 45.2mm combined however, so its definitely different this year!

See this is the thing. When people like Cheeky Monkey will bang on about how warm it was in 2004, 2016 etc, I like the point out how cloudy and miserable it was in those summers.

If the temperature is a cloudy and muggy 21-22c, it’s not a good summer in my opinion. Still dreary and depressing.

The whole ‘warmer than average’ doesn’t always mean a good summer.

umm i never said how warm it was in 2004 or 2016 let alone bang on about it..i mentioned August 2004 was warm and very wet which is was ...just stating a fact

Regarding the London sunshine stats, remember that Heathrow moved to an electronic Kipp-Zonen sunshine sensor in September 2005.  The 30-year sunshine averages (whether you're using 1961-1990 or 1981-2010) are based on Campbell-Stokes sunshine sensors, which in the UK tend to record 10-15% more sunshine in the summer months than Kipp-Zonen sensors.  So to make it a fair comparison you'd have to shave ~12% off the 30-year averages for June/July/August and then compare the resulting figures against the sunshine data for 2006 onwards.  If you do that you'll find that at Heathrow, since August 2011 the only significantly duller than average August was in 2015, with the others all close to or a little above the long-term average.  It's true, though, that even if you allow for the ~12% difference, no recent August has been as sunny as those of 2003 and 2005 at Heathrow, or for that matter 1989, 1990, 1995 and 1998.

I noticed this as well, not least because I couldn't find any indications of other weather stations (like in the Midlands or North) having a similar reduction in sunshine hours since that time.

So why do studies elsewhere (Poland, France, NZ) show the opposite to be true, that KZ records ~7% higher than CS in winter, and ~10-15% higher in summer. This was in Krakow, which is cloudier than London. Warsaw has also seen a huge increase in sun hours since switching to an electronic sensor, also cloudier than London.

Unless there are horizon issues, which there shouldn't be at Heathrow, why don't the Met Office convert all of their sunshine figures to a single standard, for recording purposes?

I would love to move to Latvia. That’s where my partner comes from, but the job opportunities are not so good over there.

That being said, I never say never.

Even a mild winter over there will still have 3-4 weeks of snowfall, plus they will always have a hot spell between late May and mid August. Their summers are fairly short, but Latvia seems to have better summers in general.

True. Latvia's normal Winters are like what we had in the UK in Nov/Dec 2010 with sub zero days & well below -10C by night. That is a normal Winter for them which shows how poor ours are in a typical Winter season. There's a place called Kolka in Latvia that can get decent dumpings of snow. Similar to what we get during easterlys in this country. Kolka can get a similar effect from the Gulf of Riga.

It will be more telling if it's still there come September 1st. There have been other horrible summer periods, this one just happens to coincide with the very start of summer. It does demonstrate just how atrocious 1954 must have been though.

OK whens it gonna stop raining?? its getting depressing, any how coming up to this period of terrible weather. I saw no "long range" forecasting of how wet it was going to be..Even some bookmakers cut their odds on June being the hottest month on record.Seriously I cant remember the last time we reached  20c... Oh and "just below" and COOL. as been nonsense in the current forecasts.I think most would agree the weather will cheer up as we head into September. Which often seems the case.

I’ve never been there. Her family are based in the countryside outside the town of Jelgava. It’s about 40 miles west of Riga.

Nice country and so much space.

I agree with you Frost Hollow, that our winters are poor in comparison, but I think our summers are also poor in comparison to the rest of the continent.

That’s why 2018 was a classic year for me,  because we kind of had the best of both worlds, with more snow falling in the February and a hot dry sunny summer.

But, at some point there’s going to be another very cold snowy spell.

Here in Leeds I believe we are now onto day 6 of consecutive rainfall and 10/14 for the month to date. I might even be missing showers on those dry days.

Riga is lovely! Went there on a work trip some years ago. Didn’t get the chance to get outside of the city, unfortunately. Hope you make it there.

Well some say we needed the rain but once people are getting flooded out of their homes and the RAF are called in to assist, it's taking things a bit too far!!

Sobering sights for some people.

Good heavens, sunshine at long last.  Hopefully everything will begin drying out now.  Still cold outdoors after another cold night (9C).  Still needing the heating on in mid-June.

Last year we visited Sigulda National Park and some other places like Birini Pils.

Most years we head to the beach, an area about 10 miles away from Jurmula(that’s like the Brighton of Latvia, and we never go there). The beach where we head to is sandy and has many miles of thick wooded tree lines.

Yesterday the rainfall for here in June is 99.3mm so far.

In 2012 (that awful year) at the same point it was 83mm  so we are on course to beat June 2012 for a bad summer.

Yeah. We need some proper warm to hot days now. Not just a 19-20 with sun and cloud. Bring on some 24c days.

A cool and wet June so far after a warm start

Quote

June 2019 got off to a false start – despite a warm first few days, the rest of the month so far has been much cooler and rather wet.

The UK has been stuck under an area of low pressure for most of the month so far, bringing a succession of slow-moving weather fronts and heavy rain.

For most days, the maximum temperature has been well below the UK June average of 17.3 Celsius, with the UK average maximum 15.5 C as of 13 June.  Temperatures across the UK were widely below average on 11 June in particular, with much of central Wales struggling to reach 10 C.
