Fingers crossed the Atlantic will provide so much needed rain this summer, there is no doubt we need it!

We don’t need much more rain in Wigan, starting to flood already and power cut off!

Like I’ve said before, August likes to buck the trend of summer these days. It’s hardly ever a shocker like May-July can often be, but likewise is hardly ever THE month that made the summer.

I quite enjoyed August 2016 and 2013, and would’ve last year too had it not rained on every important occasion during that month.

Not horrendously bad, a few burst water pipes and I’m guessing farmers won’t be too happy because the rain was bouncing it down and so might just run off and actually damage the plants they already had. I think we’ll have average maybe even higher than average rainfall for the month here after the start and end of the month

As I’m a bit ‘ahem’ older, the weather pattern of a dry spell appears to be following the same pattern as 1975. Last Summer could have hit the high point but didn’t. This winter has been dry like the winter of 75/76 according to family therefore if (and it’s a big if!) it follows like for like then we could be on for a belter of a Summer.

Lets face it- August can’t be poor again this year? It’ll be good in June (following on that if I’m on holiday abroad it’s always lovely) then into a warm thundery July ( like 1995 was) and I think August could be surprise month this year with heat in first half (like 1990 and 1995).

It shouldn't be the heat we are looking for this Summer, its the rain we should be praying for. A lesser version of 2007 would do very nicely.

New met office outlook is out for the summer. 50% warmest category, 5% coldest. Certainly doesn’t seem like this cold weather is gonna last long then. As for precipitation, slight chance of drier rather than wetter conditions (25% dry, 20% wet)

Last summer of the 2010s coming up, at the moment, it's a synch what were the worst and best summers of this decade.

2012 and 2018 respectively.

More difficult for previous decades to describe what were the best and worst summers for those decades.

2000s, it's a toss up between 2003 and 2006 for best and 2007 and 2008 for worst

1990s, best was obviously 1995 but worst is harder, 1993 or 1998?

1980s, best 1983, 1989 or even 1984? Worst? 1985?

etc....

They obviously see a strong signal for warmth this summer, with a slight bias towards drier than normal conditions, which will not be good news for the reservoirs!

Ready for hot weather now.  Last summer feels like a long time ago and I'm praying for a repeat (preferably not ending in August).

Best of the 1970s(although this is before my time, as I was born in 76)

1976, 1975. Worst summers of the 70s, probably 1972, 74, 78, and 79.

80s best summers, 1983,84, and 89.

Worst would be 1980, 85,86 and 88

90s best summers, 1990, 1994 and 95. Worst, 1993, 1998 and 96.

2000s, best were 2003, and 2006, worst 2007, 2002, 2004 and 08.

2010s, best 2018, 13, and 14, worst 2012, 11 and 2010 was slightly below par.

Best summers that I remember well are 1983, 1984, 1989, 1990 (loved this summer, got a summer job in a theme park and discovered the ‘joys’ of alcohol), 1994, 1995 (classic), 2003 (even though I had summer flu when it hit 38C, had to lie in a cold bath, awful), 2006 and 2018. Worst was definitely 2012, absolutely vile and I hope to never have to endure another like it. 2007-2012 summers were pretty foul altogether. 1985 was grim, too.

Hoping this year brings plenty of sunshine, warmth but also some decent thundery episodes (and by decent, I mean all night MCS’s, spectacular lightning and torrential rain, like we used to get in the 1980’s). Also some heavy frontal rainfall from time to time, to do away with drought worries. Just not too much cloud, please and definitely no summer gales and drizzle, big no no

Hot weather in August is fine, as long as it doesn't persist into September.  Arguably, summer like Septembers do not seem to bode well for the following winter, if you want it cold.

I didn’t think September 18 was warm all the way through. It did start to feel cold towards the end. But, I take your point.

However September 2013 was cool and that lead to a very mild winter.

Big swing to much more unsettled weather for next 7-10 day now showing on the charts. Could be a sign of things to come for the summer. I feel its going to be a mixed and changeable one.
