Report on Twitter that temp rose 6C in 1 hour in Normandy.

Good sign warmer air pushing in.

Just been out. No thunder in the annoying odd drop of rain with some heavier drops that is happening. Why do i know it's not gonna thunder?  'Cos the clouds don't look the right shade of grey/blue. It doesn't smell stormy or rainy.

I didn't think it was any more humid then this morning - i am still wearing a hoodie and glad of it.

Very slight breeze.

The actual storms aren’t here yet, this is just to ‘wet’ your appetite. They are arriving quite late this evening

This might cheer some people up! Although I am a little surprised by it as I would not have put any part of Kent (especially the EAST) as low risk. This is from Metcheck.

Good to know I’m in the highest risk zone!

A little off topic but does anyone know if we actually send up weather balloons in this country? I was surprised to learn we have doppler radar the other day when reading up on the 2012 oxfordshire supercell (a couple stations were used to track this storm), so i'm interested to know if there's anywhere to find real soundings.

They are certainly used here in France because I know an amateur meteorologist who launches them for Metéo France - they use amateurs outside big towns and cities and in remote locations. http://www.meteofrance.fr/prevoir-le-temps/observer-le-temps/moyens/les-radiosondages and heyho - https://blog.metoffice.gov.uk/2017/10/27/did-you-know-were-testing-new-weather-balloons-from-cornwall-to-antarctica/

So now we know...

This is what we need to keep an eye on. Also good to note dew points in Northern France are rising too as the humid air continues its surge northwards.

Everything that has moved over the channel so far is just general rain, nothing is due to set off in Northern France/Channel until ~6pm onwards

Normandie is a law unto itself though, weather wise, but that wouldn't surprise me in conditions like this.

Indeed we do, balloons are sent up from Lerwick, Nottingham, Albemarle, Camborne, Herstmonceux, Valentia and Castor Bay. However due to cost-cutting, these are not as routine as they used to be (twice a day, at 00z and 12z) and often several are missing from each set.

I believe our UK radar network is now all doppler, having been upgraded over the past few years - but sadly anything other than composite reflectivity is not available outside of the Met Office (not even for commercial purchasing).

Starting to look a bit messy in the sky. Have had some moderate bursts of rain here but the clouds seem pretty elevated. No extremely low cloud so this is a good sign

Just leaving work in worthing, its not warm or cold, doesn't feel particularly humid, and the sky looks standard overcast.

Mother nature has a few hours to up her game

Exactly. Our storms are progged for after 22h00 and I think it's the same for northern France. These are often the best ones, depending on whether you need a good night's sleep or not. I'm not in work tomorrow but I'll probably go to bed and then get up if there are storms. Mylo (my Border Collie) and I love to watch and I like to have Lightning Maps on at the same time to see the CG strikes. Whenever anything is progged around here I/we (OH is in the UK for 10 days ATM) we always have torches at hand and phones etc. charged up in case the electricity goes out or we start to get brown outs...

Ah that's a shame, it would be so interesting to get confirmations on supercells in this country. I use RASP UK for forecast soundings - the weather stations you've mentioned are available there but i don't trust the latest data are real. It's still very useful though.

Keep an eye on Northern France, that's where things should develop between now and 9pm.

If not, then the next area would be the channel, but chances will be lower if Northern France stays quiet.

Not necessarily, many times in these situations small cells begin to appear this side of the channel then merge together as the instability moves over land from the south coast.

Can anyone confirm if that stuff on the south coast is reaching the ground?
