Great pictures, I just wish you would have kept the sound of the thunder in.

Nothing but light rain here but with large drops.

Some impressive mushroom cloud looking convection late evening yesterday, even better with he moon above it. Shame we didn't get a thunderstorm but this was definitely was the next best thing to see and watch .

Day 1 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Sun 09 Jun 2019 - 05:59 UTC Mon 10 Jun 2019

ISSUED 05:36 UTC Sun 09 Jun 2019

ISSUED BY: Chris/Dan

A broad upper trough will persist to the west of the British Isles on Sunday and help to generate moderately steep lapse rates and the potential for widespread scattered showers, aided by and organised along zones of low-level wind convergence.

Daytime heating will produce 200-400 J/kg of CAPE by early afternoon across much of British Isles, although shear is limited in many areas so showers will likely be of the pulse variety, which will tend to limit the lightning potential somewhat. However, as showers develop and move eastwards across England and Wales, bulk shear values increase to 25-30kts and may allow for some longer lived updrafts and a higher chance of some sporadic lightning - hence a low-end SLGT has been issued here. A few isolated funnel clouds will be possible, particularly in Scotland and southern Ireland where the mean flow will be relatively slack. The most intense cells may produce some small hail.

While showers, and hence any lightning activity, will tend to weaken during the evening / night hours inland, an uptick in activity may occur over the Celtic Sea and adjacent parts of Wales / SW England / Scilly Isles during the overnight hours under the upper trough axis.

Updated warnings 1/2

04:00 Tomorrow to 23:59 Tomorrow

There is a chance that heavy prolonged rainfall could lead to local flooding and disruption to transport.

What to expect

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads

Reason for update

Updated to increase the area affected - extending this southwards down to the English Channel and westwards into much of Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Derbyshire. The start time has also been brought forward with heavy rain pushing into far southeast England early on Monday. The warning now ends at the end of Monday but further warnings for part of the area have been issued for Tuesday onwards.

Areas of, at times heavy, rain will push north and then westwards across much of south and east England on Monday. Whilst some places will miss the worst of the rain 10-25 mm of rain may occur quite widely, with some areas potentially seeing up to 60 mm and much of this falling in less than 6 hours. There is also a chance that thunder may develop later in the day over parts of East Anglia and the far southeast of England.

  • East of England
  • London & South East England
  • West Midlands
  • Yorkshire & Humber

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads

Further spells of rain, heavy at times, will continue to affect parts of eastern England during Tuesday. Whilst some places will miss the worst of the rain, a further 10-25 mm may fall quite widely, with some areas potentially seeing up to 60 mm. Much of this may fall in 6-12 hours, mainly during the first half of Tuesday. There is also a chance that thunder may develop later in the day in the south of the warning area once the morning's rain clears.

Updated warning for Wednesday and early Thursday

00:00 Wed 12 to 12:00 Thu 13

There is a chance that heavy prolonged rain could lead to localised flooding and disruption to transport.

Area has been adjusted slightly southwards and local rainfall amounts have been adjusted to reflect the potential for higher totals over the hills of NE England.

There is a chance that continued periods of heavy rain may lead to localised flooding. Whilst some places may miss the worst of the rain, a further 20 to 40 mm could widely fall. 60 to 80 mm is possible locally across the high ground of northeast England, accompanied by strong to gale force northeasterly winds. There is also a chance that thunder may develop later on Thursday in the south of the warning area as the rain moves northward.

  • East of England
  • North East England
  • West Midlands
  • Yorkshire & Humber

Winds certainly picked up and got a lot cooler. Might get a small thundery shower. And just had a loud rumble as I type this. Looks like the main rain is a few miles away

Just getting blasted by the torrential rain right now. Saw some nice lighting. Some cc's and cg's mixed in. Couldn't get any pictures though because of trees and stuff blocking the view unfortunately.

Very heavy shower (with surprisingly no lightning at the moment) has just formed to my west. I can see a wall cloud in the distance too.

So, the shower that formed to my west produced one lightning strike. And that lightning strike was when I was in the shower. What.
