The smoothing option looks good but the edges of the precip are jagged, can this be fixed? On other software where you write your colour tables this is usually fixed by putting 1 extra line of code in taking the image down zero or whatever reading it might stop at to reduce any radar noise.

yes if that could be sorted it would make it much nicer.

We've updated the radar with some new features today.

The future (predictive) radar has had a big upgrade - it now uses optical flow to predict the direction of the rainfall for improved accuracy. You can also include the predictive radar in animations by selecting it from the animations setting menu:

There is now also the option to switch on clickable map data - so clicking the map will bring up info about the precip in that location.

And also selectable from the overlay menu is an option to view rain gauge data - switching it on will select markers for the gauges, clicking one will show the recorded rainfall. At the moment this is England only, as it's using the Environment Agency API, we'll hopefully be able to plugin Wales and Scotland soon.

This new version of the radar will soon become the default radar in Netweather Extra, but in the meantime you can get to it here:

Thanks to those who have been using the pre-release version of the new V8 radar, your feedback has been very helpful

It's now ready to go for wider access, with a plan to make it the default within Netweather Extra next week. For now though, subscribers can use the new version by going to the link below:

https://www.netweather.tv/extra/radar/

You'll need to login with your usual Netweather Extra details, once you're in, if you're using a compatible browser (all the major ones inc Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge etc), you'll see a prompt inviting you to 'Save to home screen' or similar. Doing this will install it as an app, so you'll have quicker access and can take advantage of additional technologies built into it.

This new system is a PWA (Progressive Web App), which means faster access, quicker loading speeds, a more 'native' app experience, and in time will see new features built into it - such as things like (optional) rain/snow and lightning alert notifications.

Please post here or contact us through the site if you have any issues or questions. If you're on an ios device, the app can be installed if you are using Safari, it's won't offer the option to install in other browsers on there, such as chrome.

I would imagine you would be using SEPA rain guages for Scotland?. By the way its a nice couple features which have been added.

Yes, that's correct. We'll hopefully get those included soon.

Seems good although it would be nice to be able to test it properly with some actual rain...not that you've got any control over that.

Brilliant little addition!

The new radar has been amazing during the stroms this summer, really good zoom and smoothing detail!

Bravo NW!

Some rain to look at this morning, new future radar has done a good job with it's movement so far

Yes it’s much better. It shows the rain moving in the right direction now unlike before when it usually didn’t.

SEPA gauges have been added now.

do you think there will be a distance measurement tool added?

We're looking at this sort of thing currently. The first one will probably be a time measurement tool to give an idea when rain will arrive, rather than distance.

The new PWA based radar is now the default V8 radar

Thanks to all those who have helped test it and provided feedback up to this point. Please continue to shout if you spot any issues!

Installed as a desktop app in Windows 10 - Awesome!

It loads unbelievably fast on my new PC build.

I don't suppose there's the ability of desktop browser notifications for it? ie torrential rain nearby or lightning nearby?

That would be the icing on the cake!

Notifications are on the way very soon - the system for them is pretty much built already, just some finishing up required

I installed it on windows 10 when it was being tested and it worked well then although I tend to use it in the main browser more often as I’ve already got it open.

Notifications would be great, especially browser notifications as I’ve already got several apps on my phone that give notifications but no desktop notifications. You can’t have too many notifications when it comes to weather

The upgraded future radar doing a cracking job with the showers spiralling around low pressure this morning - almost seamless between the actual and future parts of the animation

Timed rain warnings have gone live this morning. So, if the postcode marker turns red there is rain due within the hour (or it's already raining), clicking the marker will bring up further info, included a timing of when rain is expected

The nearest official station to the location for weather observations. The rain amounts and near time forecast are radar based for the postcode itself.

Out of date information on Clickable map

current observations are temperature of around 6 c and pressure of 1026 mb which is very different to what is shown

Some weather stations only report on weekdays. We may have to look at showing an alternative one in this instance.
