CHELTENHAM TIPPING COMPETITION

Recommended Posts

Well March is closing in fast and the Cheltenham Horse-Racing Festival, with it too. Let's hope the Racing authorities have brought the recent outbreak of Equine Flu, under control by then. The Festival runs from Tuesday 12th March - Friday 15th March.

I plan to "host" another Tipping Competition on very similar lines, to the other Horse-Racing Competitions I've "hosted" on the Sports Zone, with a few other Categories. The basic Format will be the same.

It's simple to enter. Just select one horse, in each of the 7 races, on each day, Tues 13th March to Fri 16th March ( Inc,) A few simple rules below:

1. You will be placed a "virtual" £1 each way, on each selection, at the horses, returned starting price. Your stakes will be returned, in your "virtual"  winnings. E.g A 10/1 winner will give you a profit of £14.50, £11 for the win and £3.50, for the place part. A 20/1 winner, will give you a "virtual" win of £27, £21 for the win and £6, for the place part. A 16/1, placed horse, will give you £5, etc,  etc.

2. Losing stakes will NOT be deducted, from your total. Your "virtual" profit, will accumulate, throughout the week.

3. Place terms will be as follows: 4 or less runners (All up to win), never known such a small field to occur, at the Festival. 5,6,7 runners 1/4 the odds, 1st and 2nd. Races with 8 or more runners, 1/4 the odds 1st,2nd,3rd. Handicaps of 16 to 21 runners, 1/4 odds 1st,2nd,3rd,4th. Handicaps of 22 or more runners, 5th place will also be paid. I will post up notice of the exact place terms I'll be using, on the morning of each Race Day.

4. Any dead-heat occurring, will NOT, result in your stakes, being split!! ( Can't remember the last dead-heat, at the Cheltenham Festival.)

5. Rule 4 deductions of less than 15p in the £, will NOT be enforced.

6. You must post up your selections by 1 pm, on a daily basis. You DON'T have to give all your selections, for the whole meeting, by 1 pm on Tues. 12th.

7. You will be asked to nominate a daily "NAP". Please indicate your NAP as follows: **BUVEUR D'AIR**(NAP). Your winning "NAP", will have it's SP or TOTE ODDS enhanced by 1 pt. E.G,S.P. Evens, will become 2/1,  6/4 >10/4 (5/2), 9/4 > 13/4, 5/2 > 7/2, 11/4 > 15/4 and so on. TOTE ODDS. £1.70, will become £2.70, £2.20 > £3.20, £3.20 > £4.20, £4.20 > £5.20, etc,etc.

8. You must indicate, on a daily basis, whether you want your selections to be settled at S.P or TOTE ODDS? Failure to do so will result in your selections being settled (calculated), at S.P.

9. You will be given the choice of,1, Morning Price.2. Starting Price. I will apply the Best Odds Guaranteed system and you will receive whichever of those 2 options, offers the best price about your selection.

If you can "settle" ( calculate ), your own selections bets, that would be a big help. But I will be keeping my own record of your selections and will post up the current standings, at the end of each days racing.  Obviously, there will not be any prize money, if you win, you'll have the honour of being Net Weather Cheltenham Tipping Champion!! Surely, that's enough. Obviously, your entry will cost you nothing, either. Just a bit of form studying time!!

I will post up the link to the Racing Post website, around late morning, the day before each Race Day.

Really do hope I manage to generate, a bit of interest!!

Please indicate on this thread, if you intend to enter. Thank you.

In a short while, I will post up details of a couple of extra Categories, to "whet the appetite".

Regards,

Tom. :hi:🏇

You will be allocated a "virtual" stake of £2. You can have a "virtual" £2 Win Double, on your 2 selections or a "virtual" £1 Each Way Double, on your 2 selections. You decide!! Failure to indicate which, will mean you will be placed on a "virtual" £2 Win Double.

Count me in as usual @TomSE12  🏇

Thanks to Callum (KIRKCALDY WEATHER), above. Plus BRISTLE BOY,JENNYJANE and LASSIE, for their prompt  replies to my PM's and all have kindly agreed to enter the Competition.

Just to "whet the appetite", a couple of YouTube clips of past Cheltenham Gold Cups, that feature this Winter's elusive friend, SNOW.

The first clip shows the 1987 Gold Cup when heavy snow delayed the start of the  race  The race was eventually run and won by The Thinker.

Above is a YouTube clip of Desert Orchid's 1989. I was working for Credit Bookmaker's Sunderland, at Cheltenham that year.

Evidently, my old boss once asked, "Which one is Desert Orchid?" Apparently, the rest of the field that day, were all Bay's!! :oops:I was under the impression everyone knew that Dessie, was a grey!!

My colleagues and I, were staying at a Hotel high in the Cotswolds. When we came down to breakfast, heavy rain started to turn to heavy snow. By the time we left for Cheltenham there was a couple of inches on the ground, outside our Hotel. Although it had snowed at the course, it hadn't settled. The course hasn't any elevation!!

In the above clip, when the TV Camera pans away, you can see Cleeve Hill (one of the highest points in the Cotswolds), cloaked in snow and looking as white, as Dessie's coat!!

That day was probably the coldest I'd ever felt, working at a Racecourse!! We had driving sleet for most of the afternoon.

The Racecourse staff did very well, to get the course raceable. The going was very heavy with patches of waterlogging, evident. The last jump was cordoned off, for the first race that day the Triumph Hurdle, due to waterlogging in that part of the course.

Tom. :hi:🏇

Just a quick recap on the Categories so far, that you'll be asked to make predictions on.

Firstly, you'll be asked to select a horse in the Champion Hurdle (Tues.12th March),

and a selection in the Cheltenham Gold Cup (Fri.15th March). These are the 2 feature races, of the meeting.

You will be placed on a Double, on your 2 selections. Your allocated, "virtual" stakes forb this element of the Competition will be £2. You can have either a £2 WIN Double or a £1 EACH WAY Double. If your selections prices are short, you're better off going for a WIN Double, if the prices are long, choose an EACH WAY Double.

For the Category below, I would wait until early March to pick my selections, to reduce the chances of picking non-runners..

Please Copy/Paste your selections into the boxes, provided below:

CHAMPION HURDLE SELECTION:

CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP SELECTION:

For the 2 Categories below, I've decided to make the Market, an EACH WAY one rather than WIN Only. You will be allocated a "virtual" £5, in both these Catagories. You decide whether to go for £5 WIN selections, or £2.50 EACH WAY, in those Categories, below. Singles only.

CHELTENMAM TOP JOCKEY:

CHELTENMAM LEADING TRAINER:

With offering all these Special Concessions, it's a good job I'm not a real Bookie, I'd be "virtually" skint within a few days!!

Just want to post up a YouTube clip of another favourite memory, of past Cheltenham races.

A very classy field gathered for the 1979, Champion Hurdle. Monksfield, barely bigger than a pony, proved victorious.

Sea Pigeon (who showed enough pace to have finished 7th, in the 1973 Epsom Derby, on the Flat), cantered up to Monksfield and looked all over the winner. Monksfield may have been small but he had the "heart of a lion" and out battled Sea Pigeon, up the run-in. A great commentary from the greatest Horse Race commentator of them all, Sir Peter O'Sullevan. Actually spoke to Sir Peter, as he had an account with the Credit Bookmaker's, I used to work for.

image.thumb.png.1df783a4bb870f3ca7e106a126e284c6.png A legend and a gentleman.

Anyway, enjoy the great 1979 dual between Monksfield and Sea Pigeon.

Tom.  :hi:🏇

A couple of YouTube clips of another Cheltenham legend, Dawn Run. To date, she has been the most successful Mare, in the history of National Hunt racing. So far, she has been the only horse to complete the Champion Hurdle/Gold Cup double!! Also, so far the only horse to complete the English, Irish and French Champion Hurdle, treble. She was also Sired by my favourite Sire of National Hunt horses, Deep Run. First, her Champion Hurdle win:

And finally her historic, Cheltenham Gold Cup win.

On both occasions she was ridden by great Irish jockey, Johnjo O'Neill. He went on to become a very successful Trainer.

Tom. :hi:🏇

When Dawn Run won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1986, I was with connections of Wayward Lad who finished second. They were so gracious as the crowd went wild!

Hi Steve,

Yes. Wayward Lad was a tremendous horse as well. He was part of the "Michael Dickinson 5", when the Trainer's horses filled the first 5 places home, in the 1983 Cheltenham Gold Cup, another great memory from the Festival. Dawn Run was very gutsy and had "bags" of stamina, infact she stayed longer than the In-Laws, at Christmas!!  Just for you Steve, here's a YouTube clip of that race:

I want to introduce a couple of weather related Categories, for a bit of extra fun. Firstly, what will ground conditions (Going) be like at the start of the Meeting, on Day 1. Listed below, are current Bookmaker's Odds, for the Official Going at the start of Day 1:

OFFICIAL GOING AT THE START OF DAY 1

                                                  GOING                                  ODDS

                                      GOOD to SOFT                                   2/7

                                                      SOFT                                    7/2

                                                     GOOD                                    5/1

                                                    HEAVY                                  10/1

                                            ANY OTHER                                  20/1

                                                    WIN ONLY

                                             "VIRTUAL" STAKES - £5

If you select the "Any Other" option, you will have to nominate whether you'd like your prediction to be FIRM or GOOD to FIRM.

A going description of GOOD to SOFT (SOFT in places), shall be classed as, GOOD to SOFT. Likewise, a going description of GOOD to SOFT (GOOD  in places), shall be classed as, GOOD to SOFT, etc, etc. In other words, the main part of the description, not in parenthesis.

Please text your prediction, into the box provided below:

OFFICIAL GOING AT THE START OF DAY 1:

ITV will be showing the first 5 races, on each day of the Festival. The other Category I want to include will be, WILL IT SNOW DURING ITV's RACING COVERAGE OF THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL?

                                                                                                        NO    1/8

                                                                                                       YES   4/1

                                                                                          "VIRTUAL" STAKES - £10.

For a YES Result to be confirmed, snow has to be reported by the ITV Commentary team, between 1.30 on Tuesday 12th March and as the Horses cross the line in the last televised race on Friday 15th March. Just one snowflake observed, will be enough for a YES Result.

Please text your prediction (NO or YES), into the box provided below:

Just wanted to give notice of amendments to the following Rules (7,8,9):

7. You will be asked to nominate a daily "NAP". Please indicate your NAP as follows: **BUVEUR D'AIR**(NAP). Your winning "NAP", will have it's SP, enhanced by 1 Point.

Your "virtual" £1 Each Way will now only be placed on your selections S.P (your selection's returned, Starting Price.)

You will NOT be given the option of an Early Morning Price (A.M.Odds) or Tote Odds. I will be going out some mornings, next week, so I won't have time to collate all the Early Morning Prices (A.M.Odds)

Therefore, Rules 8 and 9 are now, Null and Void.

One final piece of tinkering with the Format/Rules this morning, honest, otherwise I shall earn the "tag" of the new Claudio Ranieri and looked what happened to him again, recently!!

I'm going to bring forward the entry deadline for the two weather related Categories:

4). OFFICIAL GOING AT THE START OF DAY 1.

OFFICIAL GOING AT THE START OF DAY 1

                                                  GOING                                  ODDS

                                      GOOD to SOFT                                   2/7

                                                      SOFT                                    7/2

                                                     GOOD                                    5/1

                                                    HEAVY                                  10/1

                                            ANY OTHER                                  20/1

                                                    WIN ONLY

5). WILL IT SNOW DURING ITV's RACING COVERAGE OF THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL? (NO or YES).

After viewing the early morning Model runs for next week, I've shortened the Odds on YES to snow, to 3/1. The Odds are now as follows:

NO 1/6, YES 3/1. It still has to be very much against seeing a snowflake at a specific time in March. But the Models are hinting at cold air moving south, on Tues/Weds. I have seen snow at the Cheltenham Festival in March before, it's not totally unheard of.

For a YES Result to be confirmed, snow has to be reported by the ITV Commentary team, between 1.30 on Tuesday 12th March and as the Horses cross the line in the last televised race on Friday 15th March. Just one snowflake observed, will be enough for a YES Result.

I have decided to let each entrant nominate the "virtual" stake for the above two Categories, either £5 or £10. I think most members are pretty "clued up" about the weather. You'll just need to study the Forecast Models a little, before making your predictions. But woe betide you, if your incorrect with your predictions. Unlike the other Categories, you will have your losing "virtual" stake taken off, your overall balance.

I'll need your predictions for Categories 4 and 5, posted on this thread, by NOON on SAT.9th March.

Your predictions for Categories 1,2 and 3, will need to be posted up by NOON on MON.11th March

Your selections for each day's racing at the Cheltenham Festival (Tues. 12th March to Fri.15th March), need to be posted on this thread by NOON, on each of those days. Thank you.

I will post up more details of the Competition and sending out "Sticky Note" reminders to those Members who've said they'd like to enter, in the next few days.

**NB** If you don't think you'll be able to complete the Competition, please think carefully before entering. It gets very frustrating for yours truly, to keep sending out reminders to entrants and not get a response, which has happened in some other "Fantasy" Competitions, that I've "hosted. Thank you.

Regards,

Tom.  :hi:🏇

Just wanted to reproduce last year's result. It was a thrilling climax to the inaugural running of the NETWEATHER CHELTENHAM TIPPING COMPETITION. Just £2.29 between the front two, after four days of racing.

RESULT OF THE NETWEATHER CHELTENHAM TIPPING COMPETITION 2018

1st            -                      BRISTLE BOY - £94.55

2nd           -                        HAYLEYBR7 - £92.26

3rd            -                            TOMSE12  - £56.93

4th            -                     JENNYJANE1 £54.77

5th             -                       MATTNEAL  £49.37

6th             -                     ANTONYBR7£48.83

7th             -    KIRKCALDYWEATHER£44.42

LAST         -                         PAULBR7  -  £34.33

What a tremendous finish to the inaugural running of the NETWEATHER CHELTENHAM TIPPING CUP,

A very small but select field of eight gathered at Cheltenham, for the event. The small field no doubt due to the fact that no prize money, was on offer!!

The invited foreign gelding,AntonyBR7, soon led and jumping boldly, headed the field , on the first day but blundered away his chance on the 2nd day and weakened rapidly, thereafter .Antony has form ,in similar events, making the early running, only to drop away rapidly, soon after. Certainly one to note, if connections can find a 2 day festival or the 3 day Festival at Aintree, rather than the stamina sapping, four days of Cheltenham!!

TomSE12 looked threatening, when making rapid headway, through the field, on Wednesday but his run, soon petered out. Perhaps would also do better, over a shorter Festival, like Aintree, perhaps.

JennyJane1, that game mare, from the SE thread, made a move on the 3rd day but ran on through beaten entrants on Friday. Perhaps one to note, if turning out for the longer trip, of the 5 day, Royal Ascot Festival.

MattNeal, prominent in the early stages, started to fade, on the final two days. Perhaps another one to note, over a shorter trip.

Kirkcaldy Weather, ran in snatches but the Scottish gelding is possibly being "laid out" for his local festival, at the Ayr Grand National meeting.

PaulBR7, ran no sort of race at all, this form is all wrong and should be ignored. Won quite a few events, over various trips, when trained at Sunderland's, this smart gelding, can be excused this baffling performance.

Now the principals, invited mare HayleyBR7 , multiple event winner when trained at Sunderlands, started to make headway, late on Wednesday and improving her position, on Thursday, got herself into a challenging position, throughout Friday, indeed taking up the running and hitting the front, one race out. Seemingly going better than the leader, blundered her chance away. A very eye-catching performance, though.

Bristle boy, made some headway, late on Tuesday and nothing was going better, throughout  Thursday. came under strong pressure from HayleyBR7 but that mare, blundered her chance away, late on the last day. Bristle boy stayed on well, up the run in, to land the spoils. Will the West country trained gelding be as effective over the day shorter trip, if turning out, for the 3 day. Aintree Grand National meeting?

RESULT OF THE NETWEATHER CHELTENHAM TIPPING COMPETITION 2018

1st            -       BRISTLE BOY - £94.55 ( prominent throughout, led but headed, regained lead, near finish, ran on well. )

2nd           -          HAYLEYBR7 - £92.26 ( rapid late headway, moving like the winner, when blundered her chance, away. Unlucky. )

3rd            -              TOMSE12  - £56.93  (Promonent early but run soon petered out. Would benefit from shorter trip)

4th            -        JENNYJANE1 -  £54.77 ( Made eye-catching late headway, perhaps would benefit, from longer trip )

5th             -          MATTNEAL  -  £49.37

6th             -        ANTONYBR7 -  £48.83

7th             -         K/WEATHER -  £44.42

LAST         -             PAULBR7  -  £34.33

Let's hope this year's renewal, will be as exciting!!

I'll be sending out reminders to those Members who have agreed to enter again this year, later on today.

Regards,

Tom. :hi:🏇

Just want to pull a few threads of the Competition together. First of all I'll address the two Categories that have the most "pressing", entry deadlines. As Netweather is primarily a Weather Website and Forum, wanted to include a couple of Weather related categories, for a bit of fun.

Firstly, the two categories (4 and 5) with the most "pressing", entry deadlines. You will be asked to predict the Official Going (ground conditions), at the start of Day 1 (1.30 Tues.12th March). See Bookmaker's current Betting Odds, below:

4.) -  OFFICIAL GOING AT THE START OF DAY 1

                                                  GOING                                  ODDS

                                      GOOD to SOFT                                   2/7

                                                      SOFT                                    7/2

                                                     GOOD                                    5/1

                                                    HEAVY                                  10/1

ANY OTHER (FIRM or GOOD to FIRM)                                 20/1

                                                    WIN ONLY

                                    "VIRTUAL" STAKES - £5 or £10.

ITV will be showing the first 5 races, on each day of the Festival. The other Category I want to include will be:

5.) WILL IT SNOW DURING ITV's RACING COVERAGE OF THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL?

                               NO    1/6

                              YES    3/1

             "VIRTUAL" STAKES - £5 or £10.

Here are a few of the latest Forecast Charts  for early next week, to assist you in your predictions in categories 4 and 5.A form guide of sorts, if you like:

Category 4) OFFICIAL GOING AT THE START OF DAY 1:

Category 5) WILL IT SNOW DURING ITV's RACING COVERAGE OF THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL(NO or YES😞

Just a couple of tips, re. the above categories.

As you can see from the Map below, Cheltenham lies in a bit of a "rain shadow" with protection offered by the South Wales Mountains. I know this to my cost, as heavy rain was forecast to hit Cheltenham, this particular year but failed to materialise, as the air dried out coming down the leeward side of the Welsh Mts. but then deposited plenty of rain on the Cotswolds, located to the East of the racecourse. I'd backed a horse that required heavy ground to perform well but the going remained Good and I lost my bet.

So it's something to bear in my mind, when making your prediction for Category 4.

image.thumb.png.2013d4a766f8c69bb09f915c1a85af79.png

I have seen snow falling during the Cheltenham Festival, most notably when Desert Orchid won the Gold Cup, in 1989. Although the snow had fallen in the morning and during the afternoon, it was more rain and sleet falling. Snow also fell in 1987 and 1979. So it has been known to snow during racing at the Cheltenham Festival. The decision is yours!!

With such a volatile synoptic set up at the moment, it's probably wise to leave your predictions for Categories 4 and 5, until Saturday morning but NO later than NOON, please.

Please COPY/PASTE. your predictions into the boxes provided below, remembering to indicate whether you want a "virtual" stake of £5 or £10, depending on your confidence for your chosen outcome!!.

Category 4) OFFICIAL GOING AT THE START OF DAY 1:

Category 5) WILL IT SNOW DURING ITV's RACING COVERAGE OF THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL(NO or YES😞

You MUST post your predictions for Categories 4 and 5, on this thread, by NOON on SAT.9th March. Thank you

I will post up details of Categories 1, 2 and 3, of the Competition, in a short while.

Regards,

Tom.  :hi:🏇

Category 4: OFFICIAL GOING AT THE START OF DAY 1. Here are the current Odds:

OFFICIAL GOING AT THE START OF DAY 1

                                                  GOING                                  ODDS

                                      GOOD to SOFT                                   2/7

                                                      SOFT                                    7/2
