Them low night time temps have certainly kept a lit on the CET, we could have been into the 8's  by now easily. Not a month of any outstanding warmth but more to the point, no colder outbreaks and winteriness either, just generally on the mild side of things.

At least it's not going to be a record breaking warm month, although still significantly above average.

Strange how the CET didn't go up after yesterday!...a warm day here followed by a relatively mild night, another mild month to add to the many.

Perhaps there will be an upward adjustment for the final figure?

Yesterday was around 8C in the CET zone, so no rise.

So did we manage to squeeze an 8c after adjustments in the end I wonder?

At the moment, they have posted revised figures for 1st to 30th and those average 7.8 C. There is no provisional or final number for the 31st, I think it will be around 7 C and the 7.8 C should therefore stand (if they don't revise them again).

At 7.8C this comfortably qualifies in the top 10% warmest March months. (currently any March greater of equal to 7.3C)

However the conversion rates of such a warm March into Aprils, Mays and Junes which make the their respective top 10% warmest are relatively low.   13% for April and June and 18% for May.

Hadley EWP tracker is updated to end of month (94 mm) and shows that from 1st to 17th, rainfall was on a record high pace, from 18th to 31st almost nothing added.

I have the preliminary scoring based on 95.8 mm (which I had set earlier), close enough to keep that in play until we have the final number on or about the 5th. (edit _ 94.8 mm)

So for the time being (now confirmed), the high scores in March will be 10.0 for syed2878 (95 mm), 9.9 for Mulzy (also 95 mm, 2nd entry), and 9.6 for Stationary Front (97 mm). Top five rounds out with Reef (90 mm) and J10 (100 mm) who exchanged positions as the final value was less than 95.0 mm.

The annual scoring as well as rest of monthly scoring was in an attached excel file. The top three in the annual race are Mulzy, Reef and Thundery Wintry Showers. A slightly revised version will be posted later in the thread now that 94.8 mm is the confirmed value.

Considering how mild the month was, the lack of any days reaching into their respective top 10 values is odd.
Overall, we had 23 days above average and 8 days below. The largest +ve anomaly was +4.6C on the 2nd, with the largest -ve being -1.7C on the 17th.

Only two previous Marches had a higher value for the minimum daily CET (5.4), those being 1938 (6.2) and 1933 (5.6). This March ties with 1997 for third highest minimum.

The range from minimum to maximum daily (10.5) was only 5.1, a value which is fourth lowest in 248 years. 1933 holds first place in this dubious distinction (a range of only 3.4), followed by 1794 and 1982 both at 5.0.

Our consensus improved slightly over the two normals in March, and the current four-month average for our consensus is basically similar to both the normals, doing slightly worse than the most recent 30 years (1989-2018 since Jan) and indistinguishable from the 1981-2010 normals overall. Our average forecast error (not absolute) is --1.5, so we have been below the actual value all four times so far. Normals were above in January and below the other three months, so their absolute average errors are larger than their bias errors of -1.1 (most recent) and -1.35 (1981-2010).

Hadley EWP posted now at 94.8 mm. Excel file of scoring has been slightly adjusted as a result, a few people moved one or two spots up or down with the slight changes in March scoring. The top five for March and the top three annually remain the same as earlier posted. I will cross-check against the CET rankings and let you know who has the lowest combined ranking (low being good in this case).

After four months (one third of the contest year), these are the combined ranks of CET and EWP forecasters. There are 68 ranked CET forecasters (you need to enter 2 of the 4 to qualify there). I show where each of these ranks in the EWP for both points and average error (since average error allows up to 2 missed months which makes the ranking a bit more similar to CET rankings, anyone not ranked for average error is scored by only their points rank). This table is re-ordered so that the average of (CET) and (EWP-points + EWP-error)/2 determines the order. If you're only in the CET contest, you'll be shown where that ranking fits. (tied ranks are not shown as tied in this table).

Congrats to Reef, weather-history and Born from the Void for being top ten in both contests. Blast from the Past and CheesepuffScott also doing very well in both contests. When comparing your ranks, keep in mind that EWP ranks range from 1 to 48 for average error, and 1 to 61 for points, some who have entered only one CET contest have a ranking (mostly 40th or higher) in EWP points so those spots are missing from the table. Your EWP ranks should be lower numbers (higher ranks) than your CET because of non-EWP entrants taking random numbers of CET rankings. For example, by 40th CET you should be around 30th EWP if you enter both.

Significant differences appear for some forecasters after taking that into consideration. There are more cases of doing much better at EWP than CET, than the other way round, so I assume the bulk of the compared forecasters are doing a little better at CET than EWP, offset by the number who do a lot better at EWP than CET. These are the entrants whose rankings are not similar in both contests (in order of their CET ranks, and with the average of the two EWP ranks used to determine the differential, one but not the other could be >20 ranks different for some not shown):

(a) CET ranks better than EWP by 20+

Maybe I do better with rain than I do with temperature because I'm more familiar with it than any kind of heat, due to my lifelong geographic advantage. I know rain!
