ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP COMPETITION

Recommended Posts

I know I'm starting this thread really early but just wanted to put a few "feelers" out there. I'm planning to "host" a "Fantasy" Competition, on the Cricket World Cup, which takes place in England/Wales between the 30th May to 14th July.

During my time, working for Credit Bookmaker's Sunderland in Croydon, Surrey, I never got round to running a Cricket Competition. One year, all the guys in the Office entered a Cricket World Cup Competition, "hosted" by the Daily Telegraph. Also I would occasionally hold a sweepstake on the total runs scored by the side batting first, in a televised 1 Day Match. That was the beauty of working for a Credit Bookmaker's. You're paid to watch Sport all day long, whilst taking a few bets on the phone. No hardship there, if you're Sports mad, like yours truly.

I was born and raised in Bromley, in the N.W. part of the County. From a tender age, I became a huge Kent fan.

In the early 1979's, I would frequently travel down to  Canterbury/Maidstone/Tunbridge Wells, on a Sunday afternoon, to watch my "heroes" play in the 40 over a side, John Player League. At that time, Kent and Lancashire were the 1 Day "Kings" Kent won that League 3 times, '72,'73 and '76. I saw many great Kent players at that time. I'm old enough to have seen Colin Cowdrey, play.

Then, of course the Cowdrey dynasty continued with his son's, Chris and Graham. Both were born, in my Home London Borough of Bromley. Chris especially did well for Kent and was a very useful. all-rounder. I also saw Kent produce some very useful England performers, the best of which were the likes of Alan Knott (the best Wicket-Keeper I've seen, to this day and a very useful batsman, too) "Deadly" Derek Underwood (who was also born in Bromley.) Brian Luckhurst ( who was a very solid opening batsman, for both Kent and England.).

My two favourite Kent players of all time though, would have to be our Overseas Stars, Asif Iqbal and Carl Hooper.

I can still see Asif dancing down the wicket to smash some poor unfortunate bowler, through the Covers or pull them through mid-wicket. Asif, was lightning fast between the wickets, also a fantastic fielder and a very useful, medium paced bowler who could make the ball, "wobble" about. Here is a YouTube clip of Asif Iqbal, almost carrying Kent over the line, single-handedly against Lancashire, in the 1971 Gillette Cup Final. Asif had got Kent to within about 30 runs of Lancashire's total, when Lancs skipper, Jackie Bond, took an amazing catch. Enjoy!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMfJHQ_bfWk

My other favourite Kent player would have to be, Carl Hooper, here is a clip of Hooper during his superb "ton", for the West Indies against South Africa, in 1997.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JA3ivQhp0s

I think the last Kent match I saw, was a Sunday game away to Essex, at Ilford. I took my son and daughter, Antony (who like me, was a big Kent fan), Hayley (like her Mother,my first Wife, supported Surrey.) The match was very tight and Ilford's short boundaries, produced a lot of runs. Carl Hooper, stroked the ball around nonchalantly and scored 70 odd, in no time. He was joined in a big stand with crash, bang, wallop batsman, Matthew Fleming (Nephew of James Bond Author, Ian Fleming.). Yours truly nearly managed to get hit by one of Fleming's, flat sixes!! Both Asif Iqbal (Pakistan) and Carl Hooper (West Indies), went on to Captain their Countries.

Other great Overseas players Kent had on their books were, Bernard Julien, a great Trinidadian all rounder, dashing batsman and Sri Lankan Captain, Aravinda  de Silva.

Of course, one that mysteriously got away, was David Gower. Gower was born and educates in, Tunbridge Wells but slipped through Kent's fingers and joined Leicestershire, instead. Ouch!!

Another player that Kent produced was Chris Tavare. Another native of the Bromley Borough, Chris was born in Orpington. When Chris played for England he had the reputation of being a bit of a "tortoise", at the crease. But, conversely, I saw Chris score very quickly in limited overs matches, for Kent.

image.png.b9d17eb1bf1d7214d112c00ec49e0e93.png

My son and daughter's Cricketing "claim to fame" is that they were Schoolmates, of Michael Carberry, when they attended St.John Rigby, R.C.College, in West Wickham, N.W.Kent.

image.png.6c9e1c27b5cd6e8a3b7a4e39a9b6ff79.png

Antony was actually in Michael's class. Antony tells me that during Games Lessons, the teacher would limit the amount of time Michael spent at the crease, as nobody could get Michael out!! Many a cricket ball was lost in an adjoining field, when Michael was at the crease. I met Michael when he was working on the "check-out" at our local Sainsburys, while waiting for his Surrey contract to come through.

Anyway, enough of my Cricketing memories, now!!

Back to the Cricket World Cup Competition. I will use the Allocated "virtual" stakes Format, that I use in my other "Fantasy" Competitions.

The Competition will be based around, Bookmaker's Betting Odds and will include Categories such as, Outright Winner, Two Teams To Contest The Final,Leading Run Scorer, Leading Wicket Taker and Fielder Taking Most Catches. You will also be asked to predict the results of selected, "Matches of the Day" but I will include every England Match. You will also be asked to predict the Result of every Match, in the Knockout Phase, through to the Final.

I will "flesh out" the Format, over the coming weeks.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN ENTERING THIS COMPETITION, BY INDICATING YOUR INTENTION ON THIS THREAD. THANK YOU.

Regards,

Tom (SE12). :hi:🏏

Above are the two Youtube links I posted earlier but I don't think they're working.

The top clip features Asif Iqbal's gallant attempt to get Kent over the line against Lancashire, in the 1971 Gillette Cup Final at Lords. Kent were only around 30 runs short of Lancashire's total, when Lancs. skipper took a stunning catch to dismiss Asif. Kent then quickly collapsed to defeat. This 12 year old was heartbroken and I could hardly eat my tea, that Saturday night. I've just about forgiven, Jackie Bond and Lancashire. All credit to Bond though, it was a stunning catch.

The bottom clip features a tremendous "ton" by Carl Hooper, against the very fiery South African "quicks", Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock.

Enjoy!!

Tom. :hi:🏏
