Has the UK Meto ever been the first to use the list of named storms? It seems like it's our pals in Ireland or even Portugal that seem to actually want to use the system....

I think Jo's answered that. The UK Met has a different threshold to the Irish Met, which tips the balance towards them naming a storm before the UK one does.  Throw in that Eire generally sees our storms first, then naturally you would expect them to call it first.  It's not a case of "wanting" to use the system, it's a little bit more complicated than that.

I think they are ignoring it now.

Dunno about impacts as the met office seem extremely inconsistent with it issuing warnings for events that nobody really notices and then failing to issue a warning for when a more thna months rainfall falls in a few hours. I suggest the Irish way is much more reliable and safer for the general public.

Anyway moving on. This morning wind didn't reach us a gust up to 39mph was the highest recorded so I guess the main action was much further south. GFS downgrades tomorrows winds a little bit but increases them on Saturday morning before a more rapid moderation comes into play in the afternoon. I suspect tomorrow we won't have a warning and the wind will cause some issues round here and in the peak district..

Gusting to 40 mph here this morning but, looking at the GFS 00 charts, it could be that the strongest winds in this area are during the early hours of tomorrow morning.

It's going nuts here. Wind speed has been circa 20mph, gusting to 45mph. That's impressive for my location considering the Purbeck hills create a bit of shelter.

There's no warnings where i am today and a yellow warning tomorrow even though the strongest winds are forecast for 2-3 pm today.

The real sting in the tail from this low does occur overnight and into the morning but nevertheless, winds should still increase somewhat this evening and no doubt disruption will occur. Would not rule out somewhere getting a 90mph gust!

Love this sort of weather, much better then the boring and miserable cold spells we've been having where i have no hope for them until it actually happens to my location.

on westcountry live just now, they had a report, because of an incident

Man died after tree fell on his car

https://www.itv.com/news/westcountry/2019-02-08/driver-left-with-life-threatening-injuries-after-tree-falls-on-moving-cars/

Also mentioned Met Office removed the yellow wind warning yesterday... but it's back now

Quite bog standard where i am, i'm sure coastal and upland areas were worth a warning but most of the central belt didn't even get gusts over 50mph.

This tree fell just after my daughter with my baby granddaughter drove past it she saw it fall. And my other daughter would have been under it if I had not delayed her leaving.  It's been a wild eve here.

So pleased your daughters and granddaughter were either side of that and are ok.

This morning's trip to Leeds was a bit Marty Pellow...lots of standing water, until probably Windermere or Ings. Dubs where I wasn't expecting them, instead of where I was thinking they would be.

One guy I know wrote his car off in a flood ....which is a bit of a bummer for him...
