Just had the squall passing over Bempton. Most violent one I have experienced, wind absolutely howled for about a minute, with torrential rain. Then a single flash of lightning and a rumble of thunder on the back edge. I dont know what max gust was. Fortunately no damage so far apart from power dipping on and off. I'd be interested to know max gust locally.

We have significant flooding around here, that is looking to surpass the boxing day flooding. A chance the a high school in Cross Hills is going to be flooded which has never happened; environment agency has put a flood warning on a large chunk of Cross Hills, Glusburn and Sutton in Craven (3 small towns). Fire Brigade were dealing with flooding there 4 hours ago before that nightmare squall hit.

MENU

Heavy snow showers and icy surfaces are likely to lead to travel disruption, particularly over higher routes.

What to expect

Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services

Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

What should I do?

Tips for cycling in icy conditions - from Cycling UK

How weather impacts on rail travel

Further details

Issued: 11:10 (UTC) on Sun 9 Feb 2020

Showers will turn increasingly to snow later on Monday, becoming frequent and heavy at times and lasting through Tuesday. The snow showers will occur particularly over high ground giving locally 1-3 cm above around 150 metres and 3-8 cm above 300 metres. Snow will gradually build, perhaps leading to accumulation of 10-15 cm on the highest routes. Any snow accumulations over low ground are likely to be temporary. Icy surfaces are likely to cause problems, especially overnight. Strong winds will be an additional hazard with gusts of 50-60 mph at times leading to drifting of snow over high ground.

Just had the squall line through here!

Very intense.

Also it was some cold front! Check your weather stations, mines halved in temperature from 12.5c to 6.6c in about 30 mins!

At least it's been an exciting weather day finally in this boring winter!

The temperature drop here was remarkable, we managed 13.4C to 6.8C in about 5 minutes. Sustained winds as the front passed over were 50-55mph, though we didn't beat the 62mph gust from 9am. The rain rate was impressive at 85mm/hr and we had some hail too. No thunder here unfortunately, but it is probably the most notable cold front since January 2005.

Northern Powergrid's powercut map is offline and the 105 helpline is very busy too.

I posted on the Sunday weather page but just to add in here

Vis was below 600 m for quite some time in intense rain, possibly below 100 m briefly at times. Rainfall showed 2.6 mm at the 'storm' onset, currently 16.6 mm, T was 13.6 it fell to 7.8 in a few mins. No idea about the wind as my Davis only has that 'silly' wind reorder at just above the T sensor. The airport showed a max of 60 mph on the squall  when I checked, someone in Macclesfield quoted Manchester airpot as recording 75 or was it 85, not sure if KMH or MPH. In either case in 20 years working there I never saw anything approaching those speeds

Snow Weather Warning :

Monday 15:00 till 12:00 Wednesday

Doubt we will see 15cm's here, even though we are likely to get about the most falling as the grounds now sodden. We would need it to go below freezing for a bit to get it to settle.

Calder Valley well flooded

The Calder is deeper than it was on Boxing Day 2015...... not good , not good at all

With the flood works 6 months away from being finished i thought we'd got away with it for a number of years but No!

Here we go again!

We were lucky, it wasn't as bad as Boxing day for us, but Calder Valley has been done over again. Oxenhope's gauge to the North of the valley recorded 20% more than on Boxing day. In the Aire valley region Keighley, Haworth, having significant flooding - again.
