An Amber National Severe Weather Warning for rain has been issued with heavy rain expected in the Pennines on Thursday.

Accumulations of up to 100mm are possible within the warning area which could cause significant disruption.

A wider area to the east of Manchester covering Leeds, Sheffield, Lincoln and as far north as Middlesbrough is under a Yellow weather warningwhere rainfall totals could widely reach 20-40mm with 60-40mm possible over high ground. There is a further separate Yellow warning for rain in north Wales.

Chief Meteorologist Neil Armstrong said, “With a weather front from the latest low-pressure system effectively stalling over the north of England there will be a period of heavy and sustained rainfall through Thursday in the north of England. With the possibility of up to 100mm of rain falling on already saturated ground there could be some significant disruption.

“A strengthening north-easterly wind will make it feel even more unpleasant. Take extra care if you are travelling and keep up to date with the Met Office forecast for the latest information.”

Looking at the radar looks like the rain is going to stall further north than us so the amber warning may be unneeded here. Time will tell.

Todmorden and Hebden Bridge are getting hammered if the radar is correct, and we all know what that is likely to mean

Just checked they are forecasting a river level of 2M at Todmorden tonight, flooding occurs after 1.2M.

Lots of surface water flooding around Leeds. The council don’t clear the drains anymore and with the leaf fall lots of water just going over the top of them.

There is more info from the Env Agency, they work closely with the Met Office when issuing warnings, so it does look like this one was led by the EA. The impacts on the ground, it's for surface water flooding, which then prompted the MO amber Rain warning. The tweet has key and more details.

Rainfall area expand in the last half hour or so after a lull so it's back to moderate rain. Heavier rain lurking nearby.

If we get the suggested levels we could see a repeat of the flood in Sheffield like 2007.

Hope you are right because that would mean the rain eases in my area (Mansfield) but looking at the radar I fear persistent often heavy rain for me for the rest of the day and possibly through most of the evening/night.

Or am I wrong?

Rain line seems to be stable from Sheffield to Todmorden / Hebden Bridge. Rainfall amounts falling over both are staggering, likely to be significant flooding unless this moves. EA also have the projected levels for Skipton to flood today, hence why their severe area seems to cover the Calder and Aire.

Looks like it's stopped pushing north at the moment at least if not permanently. Watching the river levels in Sheffield as rivers like the Sheaf are shooting up. I've recorded 26.2mm according to the davis since midnight. The highest 24 hour total recorded since 1989 is 78mm in August 9th 2004 followed by 77.1mm in 2007. The June one wasn't coupled with flooding that came later.

EA expecting River Don in Sheffield to peak at about 2.78m tonight. I think in 2007 the highest was about 4.5m? Either way some form of flooding likely, just a question of how severe it gets later on this evening.

Near enough for Lady Bridge which was 4.47m. River sheaf is already having minor flooding. However it needs plenty of rain to keep the level up.

Looks like this was done to make sure Hebden Bridge/Todmorden areas fully included as before they were very much sitting on the edge of the warning.

Certainly looking grim for Sheffield area on the radar currently, rivers continuing to respond.

EA has started issuing the Flood Watches and the First Warnings.

Watches for Aire, Worth, Calder, Sheef and Don.

Warnings already covering areas North of Sheffield and around Heckmondwike, and this is only just starting.

Yes, and worryingly, the predicted maximum river levels for this evening keep trending upwards too.

Check your risk of flooding: get current flood warnings, river and sea levels, check the 5-day forecast or use flood risk maps

Both our streams are holding at levels where its only minor flooding thankfully, but I know when its like this it causes the Aire to flood significantly.
