I am not usually in this particular regional thread but I did commute through Whaley Bridge for over 3 years in my youth and know the area well.  The rainfall totals being put about in the media for the area made no sense at all to me but thankfully, something more realistic and more local has appeared this evening.

North West Tonight say 388 mm of rain fell near Whaley between 26 July and 1st. August so in 6 days. Average for July is 87.8mm. That is one heck of a downpour by any standards!

151mm since Monday on this station. https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IKETTLES2/graph/2019-07-31/2019-07-31/monthly

Thanks for that, so I've been looking for verification of the 388mm reported on North West Today yesterday evening (I recorded it, they posted it on screen). Nothing so far BUT ...

Yesterday the BBC website reported:

Quote

According to Environment Agency data, the gauge at the Cat and Fiddle Inn on the Derbyshire-Cheshire border recorded 210.8mm of rainfall between 26 July and 1 August, while the gauge at Hayfield New Mills saw 177.2mm of precipitation.

The Met Office say the average for the month of July in Buxton from 1981-2010 was 87.8mm.

When you add the Cat and Hayfield totals together you get .. 388 mm as reported yesterday. It looks suspiciously like someone in the BBC regional studio has added them together to come up with an inflated figure. The Cat is 5 miles south of the reservoir near the head waters of Todd Brook (Shining Tor) so that's the most likely figure IMO - 210.8 mm is still a heck of a lot in a few days, even so - and it won't be the highest total in the area as rain gauges can't be everywhere..

Yes, if 388 would have been recorded in one station, chances are something around that would have been more widespread, which is around 3 months rainfall, trust me 3 months rainfall in a couple of days would have meant much more widespread and severe consequences in Britain than a few feet of water on a few roads and 1 Dam about to burst.

EDIT :  In fact its nearer to 4 months rainfall.

Something just popped up between Congleton and Stoke, got very bright colours already? Moving towards Macc? Trying to verify if its real or not?

After a couple of mostly sunny, dry and warm days here, looks promising for thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon and evening. UKWW convective forecast specifically mentions Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Lancs as being particularly favourable locations for storm development. Will be an interesting day.

Showers died quickly as they approached here. Thought we would get a couple of lively showers, but they fizzled out quickly. Tomorrow looking much more promising for storms atm.

Mostly sunny start to the day here, but definite signs of instability in the atmosphere with plenty of altocumulus clouds around.

Been very benign so far today no showers anywhere near here. Feeling a bit humid out there though.

The rain is ridiculous the cell must have back built. Constant thunder still, noticed a few flashes but I guess it's all elevated?

Angry looking clouds to the south. Radar showing activity there.

All the fireworks so far have appeared mostly to the west of the M60 but a few home-grown thundery showers bubbling up further east now, feels humid and the suns still out here, but not sure for how long.

Storm now passed over orrell.

Still very warm and humid. Still potential for later?

The electrical activity in the Wilmslow cell died and I can see the remains passing just to the West of here at present. Sky still looking very promising with cloud turrets visible to the South. According to UKWW, the main window for potential is only just beginning, lasting through until 22:00. Very warm and muggy here.

You guys in West Lancs & Merseyside have done great today. I'm the green eyed monster. Heard a rumble of thunder before but it's been dire here in the east! Frustrating.

Still time for something to happen in these parts, but all the electrical activity in showers to the South West has died. Beginning to feel like the potential has been and gone here now.

Edit: lightning strikes showing up to South-West of Stoke just after I wrote this!
