We've got the Police Helicopter over Whaley circling the Toddbrook Dam, observing the damage after yesterday's overflow destroyed 1/4 of the retaining concrete blocks. No mandatory evacuations in place for now but people are being told to stay away and prepare for evac if the call is given.

Heaviest rain I have seen in a long time here now. Very Heavy+++, like someone pouring buckets out the sky. Flowing down the main road (Live quite a way uphill from it thankfully). If this doesn't deserve a flood warning hate to see the areas that did.

You wouldn't want to be anywhere near this.

A few more little crackers just missed me to the West unfortunately. Stuff the temperature records - lets break some rainfall records - far more interesting.

Waking up at 6am to the sound of CH-47 Chinook 'rotor clap' is certainly a surreal experience in this part of the world.

It's only around 1,400 from 400 houses at the bottom of the valley who have been evacuated contrary to what the beeb and sky are saying, the majority of the town's population are situated higher up around the valley slopes well away from any possibility of flooding. Being 41m (131ft) above the Goyt i'd seriously start to worry if we got any water lapping-up at the doorstep here.

I took a wander up on the hill earlier to take a peak at the operations, the main focus still being on the breach at this time.

Looks like they are doing everything they can to stabilise the situation...today's decent weather will help them in their efforts but now Sunday's forecast not looking brilliant....and an unsettled at times week to follow.

What are they trying to do with that helicopter causing waves and spray to go everywhere?

They are dropping bulk bags of MOT into the hole to hold back the water.

I am not usually in this particular regional thread but I did commute through Whaley Bridge for over 3 years in my youth and know the area well.  The rainfall totals being put about in the media for the area made no sense at all to me but thankfully, something more realistic and more local has appeared this evening.

North West Tonight say 388 mm of rain fell near Whaley between 26 July and 1st. August so in 6 days. Average for July is 87.8mm. That is one heck of a downpour by any standards!
