Yes it looks like the Candlemas proverb was right after all.

I will be keeping the old radio on in case of lightning this evening; steep lapse rates and a few hundred J/KG of CAPE.

Wednesday lunchtime is looking very interesting with over 500 J/KG CAPE in the warm sector of the next low.

Well what a journey along the A595 between Carlisle and Cockermouth last night!! This was already causing major problems before the yellow warning was issued!! These scenes were below 100m! Poor forecast & warnings for this yesterday, Cumbria Council and Highways were not prepared with no gritters/snow ploughs out. Many cars were stranded, thank goodness for winter tyres!

Was the weather warning for snow? We just had cold rain here, temps about 4-5 degrees, must have been marked evaporative cooling, unusual for the far north west of county to have snow, snowline was about 450 metres this morning.

Looking further ahead, lots of snow potential for Cumbria, increasingly so for lower ground as we move into next week.

The UKMet issued a yellow warning about the same time that the disruption started! So no real advanced warnings hence the state of the roads with no highways grit or snow ploughs out and about at all.

Got a call from my mum who lives at High Harrington right on the coast, she said she’d just looked out after hearing cars struggling & there’s about 2” of snow, snowing heavily and blowing a gale! In Carlisle it was still wet and sleety but less than an hour later it was 0c and there was a good 3” of snow in places and it was coming down fast, from wet to without in an hour! Major problems on the roads.

A lovely sunny day here. Might not see the Sun again much all week. Still a marked risk of thunder tomorrow  for the time of year, and now the  met are on board.
