Managed about an hour or so of quite moderate snow, which gave another dusting - everything became white very quickly thanks to cold surfaces. However, it soon turned to moderate rain and a rapid thaw has set in - ground still hard though, and ice is taking a while to clear.

A much milder night ahead.

Suspect this thread will go back to slumber for a while, until the next snow chances appear.

Slow cooker pulled pork with spiced sticky red cabbage in a brioche bun.

Beats seeing the snow melting

For the first time since Tuesday, the car may be able to make it up the drive tomorrow (and the one that's up there now can hopefully be driven down!).

The 5cm or so (give or take a few cm) that fell on Tuesday afternoon/Wednesday AM has really done well do stick around for a good 5 days, especially in sheltered parts although even down here at 165m Uppermill's still just about white.

Hills have looked beautiful all week, but I don't expect much in the way of snow patches to stick around for too long as I can't imagine it's too deep even at 400m.

Still, it's been a fine week of Wintry weather, the snow cover has looked beautiful and what's more I'm really of the opinion we're going to get some more by the end of March - just if and when is another question!

They say you learn something every day and this is one for me.

Rare snow rollers spotted in field near Marlborough

Quote

"Conditions have to be just right for snow rollers to occur: a smooth, un-vegetated hillside, such as in this case near Marlborough, enhances the chance of them being formed.

"A layer of thin snow, settled atop existing ice and not sticking to it, combined with specific temperature, moisture level and wind speed, are fundamental to the creation of these natural oddities."

It was odd here it started as drizzle, turned to sleet then back to drizzle, but the surfaces including roads became very slushy and really quite slippery.

Apparently the road at Skelwith was blocked with struggling vehicles and a serious accident.

When oh when will the govt get real and insist on all weather tyres?!?

I noticed that the gritters were out around 17.00 when I was approaching Hadfield.  It was 4°C on the car .

I think sometimes the local councils aren't particularly clued up on what the weather may do overnight.

Time and time again I've seen them out gritting the roads when they really didn't need to.

Think those snow ploughs are onto a loser in Japan, that weather reminds me of the Beast from the East last year.
