The difference between summer 2011, 1st half of summer 2016 and summer 07 being in a cloudy, cool westerly flow to slack low pressure overhead which at least gives sunshine whilst torrential downpours also.

I appreciate that, your area had the only real Winter weather this year. But much of that sodden earth is just that, the water levels are still to low. I don't want a washout, far from it,but a balance would be in my opinion a more favourable outcome.

If we have a dry spring, which is normally the driest time of the year but I suspect we`ll get a cold wet or snowy spring just hope we don`t get a summer like last year, never seen the ground so dry for this time of year.

Fingers crossed the rain will come and no repeat of last year, that could be very hard both for wildlife and business that relies on a normal Summer.

Hoping for a warm and sunny spring with thundery outbreaks now and again.  Been quite damp here recently so no problems with water levels.

If we could drag this current high even in this position surprising how cold it would get.

What kind of airmass was that though?

A surface cold easterly with freezing fog at night, started as a warm Sly aimass though.

Wouldn't take much of an adjustment to have a chillier spell of weather.  May well change into the start of March but I think for the rest of February we can expect to see some lovely spring-like weather.

Any cold would probably be shortlived in such a setup, as it was in 2008. Temperatures recovered very well that month after a colder spell mid-month with some very cold nights.

I can't really see a setup like this developing anyway this month- the Atlantic was a lot less active in 2008 and with those deep lows to our west it's going to be hard to get a setup like that one.

I remember Feb 1998 when it hit 18C. I drove around with the window down with my arm out of window. Amazing.  I usually hate winter (apart from heavy snow), but this winter has seemed quite tame. Very dry and now incredibly mild. It really is just a game of chance. My brother in the US has had weeks of sub zero temps and the schools there in Nebraska started off issuing snow days but it has lasted so long they have given up and called the kids in, even during a recent day of -20C wind chill and heavy snow. We  live in a world of extremes. Just so happens this year is our trim for extreme dry and mild.

Very impressive temps in Northern Spain yesterday, 22C in Bilbao and Santander. Can't be far off a record for the time of year? Interesting to see how cold Scandinavia always stays at this time of year even when we enjoy mild conditions. Probably due to how cold the Baltic Sea is at this time of year?

Edit: Looks like they managed 25C in Bilbao in February 1998

Weather Online's March forecast

Quote

Valid from 01/03 to 28/03 2019

Issued: Friday 22nd February 2019
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Chilly overall, mixed with risk of rain, sleet and snow, milder later

March is showing signs of presenting classic '...In like a lion, out like a lamb' conditions. The beginning of the month may be briefly fair before turning much more unsettled. It should then turn fair again in the second half of the month and may become mild or perhaps warm.

*1/3/19 - 7/3/19*

May start fair and mild. Could quickly become more unsettled. Risk of strong winds.

*8/3/19 - 14/3/19*

Wet and windy for a time. Improving later from south.

*15/3/19 - 21/3/19*

More settled. Drier with sunny spells. Mild.

*22/3/19 - 31/3/19*

Fair and mild. Sunny spells and dry.

I'm sick to death of sunshine already and it's only February.

Snowless marches here 1991 unless you count a hail shower on the 1st I think not.

1997 snowless march and april very boring spring.

2011 also both months devoid of anything wintry, april gave much more interest with thundery showers later in the months though,so 1997 is given the rubbish spring award excluding May.

Unbelievable really how prolonged it’s been since the middle of the month. Very unusual for this country!

Must be up there for longevity. You might get the odd day or two way above average, but to get a fortnight of temps so far above normal, with crystal clear skies much of the time is rare as hens teeth.

Roll on a nice cold march and a nice wet, cool summer!  Anyone who wants to sweat for three solid months can fly ro Spain and suffer it there.
