Have a pile of slides inheritated from my mum. Some including me looking nice with hair 60 years ago. I do not have a proper converter so tried various things. Can capture the photo ok but not exactly crystal clear.

Best results by having a white page on my pc. Then hold a slide, on a fixed clip, in front of it.  Then photo the result with a camera.

Anyone got any suggestions to improve the quality?

Must admit that is similar to how I've done it too .. holding in front of a white card .. but on a sunny windowsill.
Came out quite well.

I had a blank Word document on screen for white back lighting the slide.

Have to find my tripod that is hiding somewhere in the house so camera is also fixed then use time delay to photo so no shame. That might help.

As I had so many slides to get through I was fortunately given a proper slide converter. Saves an awful lot of time and effort. The method above is fine for a few.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
