And so the mild dross continues:

Temperatures for parts of NE Scotland wont fall below 9C over the next 48 hours.

Bizarre!

9C in north-eastern Scotland, meanwhile snow is expected at 300m above sea level in southern Italy... What a strange winter

Dull but dry so far this morning. It was so dark all morning that we  needed lights on in steading to feed /bed  cattle  even at midday. Strong southerly  wind but mild at 12c

This is Scotland chaps.  If you want snow and ice, head north and east - Scandinavia still gets proper winters, although no doubt the old fogeys there grumble like us.

'When I were a lad, we used to get hunted by packs of wolves on the way to school and had to dig shelters in snow drifts to escape. When the polar bears appeared, we knew we were up lemon creek. Paddles were no use as the ice was too thick to break.'

Ha ha! Too true! My pals in Vest-Agder are dismayed at their 8C and pishing rain as well

This is our tenth winter up here at 900ft and it looks like going down as our first without any lying snow this side of the new year

I know this is Scotland, but the current temperatures and outlook are anything but normal - 13-15C in parts of the country.

If the high pressure settles over us, we could get some temperature inversions with seasonal temperatures at ground level. I think we will end up sandwiched between high pressure to our south and Atlantic systems tracking to the north (mild, windy and occasionally wet).

Also heading east and north wouldn't help either. Most of the European half of Russia has no snow at the moment, Moscow has been experiencing near record breaking temperatures. It was +9 last week there

I suppose NL is not that unusual to get those sort of temps in this set up, especially if you trace the isobar flow back to deepest NW Africa and this source of air mass carried through your domain. See West coast of Norway close to double positive digits as well.. Still does not seem right for winter and I am sure its not all good for the farming cycle up there.

Iceland and northern Scandinavia currently have proper winter...

No, you're right, 14C (we're forecast this tonight) isn't 'normal' - but this is the way it's going.

You'll only get grass growth is the overnight temps don't drop below about 7C so it isn't that common in Scotland except next to the sea. Dunno quite how close NL is. My garden is almost littoral (inner firth) and we could mow our lawn all year round. Except when it's covered in snow ;)

This seems to remind me of 2006-07 - would I be right there?

As the crow flies about 4 miles but its now 13c and last nights temperature was about 9c so growth has started ,descending wind off the the Cairngorms to the south of us is the culprit.

  • Chilly with an increasing risk of frost

Once Monday's band of rain fades, the next few days will be drier. However, it will feel cool, even cold, in the breeze or under gloomy skies, with an increasing risk of frost. Read the full update here

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming. Week Ahead: Cool but largely dry until later in the week, when low pressure returns

We keep a chilly northerly flow going through much of the coming week, especially noticeable in the east. Cloud and rain spreading south Monday, but after that, most places largely dry until later in the week, when it looks to turn more showery. Read the full update here
