Netweather winter forecast has been issued. A milder and wetter affair.....

Thanks for this. <swerves>

Rain started in Caithness late morning and got quite heavy for a while. Probably still is, going by the noise on the cabin roof.

Didn't even attempt the hills today. Wet, grey and generally miserable.

Afternoon all!

I would take an Autumn like we just had every year! (From someone who lives in the West of Scotland - not sure if some of you ladies and gents in the North East, East or South East would)

Special mention for November!

Many people in England will remember Autumn 2019 as a very wet season, but this hasn’t been the case across the whole of the UK.

Really enjoyed the seasons so far this year - especially Summer and Autumn...let’s see what Winter brings.

Have a good night!

Edit: Great work below @Kirkcaldy Weather - that has got my very excited!  We can dream! Six foot drifts, two feet of snow and 102 days of lying snow!? Unbelievable!

So the mean temp for Scotland for November was 3.5 C other years with that for November were 1977 and 1930 - "1977-78: Mid January, 6 foot drifts! A week later, and 4 inches fell. Mid February saw 4 inches also. Late January, heavy snow in Scotland, drifting, 28 inches falling in parts! Mid February was very snowy in the North East, East and South West. February 11th had 1 ft in Durham and Edinburgh. Feb. 15-16th South West England, blizzard with huge drifts, sounds like my cup of tea!"  "1930-31: February opened well, with 2ft of Snow in Northern England and Scotland, and later on snow fell generally ( early March ) with 18 inches falling on Orkney. Snowy."

other mean temps for Scotland in November were

N Scotland - 3.2 C - same year 1950 - "1950-51:  This winter will be remembered as the snowiest winter of last century at high levels. There were 102 days of lying snow at Dalwhinnie (1000ft) (83 days reputedly in 1946-47) 15th December saw 15 inches of snow In Shanklin, IOW, in 3.5 hours! Bournemouth saw 10 inches, Scarborough and Lowestoft, 14 inches. Snowy."

W Scotland - 4.2 C - same year 1930

E Scotland - 3.4 C - same years 1972, 1942, 1911

Re: the 1950/51 winter mentioned above, I've cribbed a couple of photos from Flickr (taken by the late Adam Watson) showing the exceptionally deep snow cover in the Cairngorms.  The first one shows Garbh Coire Mor of Braeriach, with an estimated depth of 25m + at the base of the cliffs.  The second one is from upper Glen Feshie, and apparently shows the River Feshie completely covered over with snow.  I doubt anything quite like this will ever be seen again in our lifetimes, unfortunately!

Garbh Choire Mor - 20.4.51Glen Feshie - 14.4.51

Another very wet  dark afternoon and back too to inches of mud.Temperature back up at 10c tonight and a strong west wind howling round the house.Been one of the most  weather challanging years on the farm so roll on 2020. Part of this years problem is that we are on a  small  ridge of boulder clay overlying old red sandstone  looking down on the sandy coastal strip and a dryer than average year always suited us. 2018 was perfect but you never said this to any farmers on the coastal sands.

The Mo and bbc are going for gusts near 50mph through the central belt on Thursday, could be the first warning for wind in a few months in this area.

I hope I never see an autumn like this again! Only saving grace has been some nice frosty days to break up the grey, lashing, miserable pish! Horrible at times

Did anybody see the meteorite (I think) at 6.13 this morning?  I was driving away from the house and saw a bright flash in the sky to the south west of Glasgow. My security cam confirms the area and time. It may be on my dash cam footage but it was just as I turned a corner so may have missed it.

Yes tentative signs at the moment but nice to see the interest is sparking up in plenty time for Xmas.

The general theme looks really good for the cold air to arrive with the snow distribution to be sorted out a lot closer to the time but we seem to have a much better margin for movement of the cold air placement as oppose to down south but as long as the general theme continues then there will be snow in the forecast for Scotland next week for sure.

The SE Model discussion is going mad over charts which are still a week away pointing out where the snow will fall

Hopefully the snowy charts come to be true, but my feet are firmly on the ground as this could all quickly change again

The Madder Than a Box of Frogs Thread is indeed going Into full overdrive.

To be fair though most past Decembers have seen the clinging on to monthly or seasonal forecasts giving faint hope , but this is only a week away.

bring it on

It'll probably all go breasts up tomorrow.

My prediction would be sleet showers with possibly a couple of short lived snow showery spells around next weekend. The snow depth charts showing 6 inches plus in Glasgow next Friday are unlikely to verify to say the least.
