Good covering of snow here above Lairg this morning and higher hills all white.  Cold and frosty tonight

Hardwood, depending on type, tends to burn longer than softwood.

I use a stove and have found that Beech, Ash and Oak are the best.

Kiln dried is the fastest hottest burner i find. Good for a quick heat boost.

Peat is good. Smells amazing.

4.1/2°C

We got 2 m3 of softwood @ £55/m3 and 1m3 of hardwood @ £95/m3 recently hopefully enough to see us through the winter. I can confirm that both burn and produce plenty of heat, but whether the hardwood burns for twice as long to justify the cost I've not yet determined. It does burn a bit hotter according to the thermometer on the stove flue pipe.

Raining this morning, just slightly too warm to be anything more interesting. Could wake to a dusting tomorrow though, or more likely a slump of slush on the car windscreen.

Just had a heavy hail shower  so winter has arrived here too on a moderate NE wind an almost perfect direction to funnel snow showers to us off the Firth.Supposed to be a 50% chance  early a.m.  tomorrow of snow for us so we will see. Got another bit of the garden dug this afternoon but soil still very wet.  Been a real challange the weather this year since the middle of May both in the garden and on the farm. Currently 3.5c

On looking at the radar we have  a classic North Sea streamer setting up over us . Radar also shows that .way out over the North Sea showers are still of sleet but when they hit land and a little elevation they are snow.

Not really answering your question but we found wood isn't hot enough and is more work than coal. We burn smokeless eggs and only need fill the stove twice a day to burn it 24/7 .

First flakes of winter falling and we have a dusting  of hail and snow  at 1.5c.       Looking at radar there may be a little more to come

Usually firewood dealers will price on 1m3. Ton bags are slightly less at 0.87m3.

£55 for 0.87m3 is still a very good price but it depends if the wood itself is good. I'd suggest asking the seller exactly what kind of hardwood hes selling?

Ash, Beech, Oak, Sycamore, Elm or silver birch - then buy it.

If he mentions Poplar or Alder then avoid.

Theres a guy over my way sells ton bags of seasoned mixed hardwood for £35.

You'll need to give me that guys name as that's seriously cheap from what I've seen. First year we've actually bought wood as last year we used stuff from trees that were taken down in our garden and next doors.

Sprinkling of snow here, evident on the house roof, garden walls etc. First of this autumn/winter.

I'm off today so I'll go and see exactly what they are selling. The last I heard was they deliver locally, so you'll be fine and they were offering discounts on bulk buys.

I've not used them yet as I still have around 12m3 of wood lying about.

I'll go and see the seller asap, see what's what and get back to you.

Some passing snow showers yesterday evening, promptly freezing to surfaces. This morning they were heavier/prolonged while leaving for work. Grantown area getting particularly battered, workmate saying 3 to 4 inches cover. Snow falling and lying (albeit thinly) down to low level Inverness, first visit of the white stuff for the city. Been a raw week to be working outside, plenty low temps, snood a must!
