A couple out of a number of photos posted on Western Isles Weather of a possible tornado in Lewis. A funnel cloud was also reported in Ness.

Saw this one also.

Just looked at the site and there are others but all very similar to those posted and taken from same three locations. One also of a small funnel cloud in Ness also there but nothing like as impressive.  The owner of Western Isles Weather is I think a member on here who does the US storm chases.

Great picture taken by Ross Mackenzie last night from the Shetland Islands.

Stunning day so far, sunshine a few clouds and a bit of a breeze.

Complete opposite here. Unrelentingly wet until about an hour ago, now rain is off but breezy and cool.

Not a bad day at all. After the downpours at the end of the week, this evening's dog walk was pleasant. Definitely wellies required though:

Looks like it was dire up your way / Aberdeen today

Was actually a lovely day here with plenty of sunshine and a little bit of a breeze.

Wet day here till late pm but not as heavy as further east. Started off cool at 7c but got up to 15c late pm when sun maaged to come out. Cattle starting to look at the supplementary feed we have put out for them as grass growth slows after what has been a great summer for grass growth.

Good to be back on the thread again after what seems like a long hiatus.

I don't have high expectations for the coming winter - 2017/18 was good here and 2009/10 and December 2010 were the most memorable and 1995 too; last winter only had a couple of times where we had any decent snow.

I think though there will be at least 1 spell of snow this winter however it pans out.

Nothing really to get excited about just yet - certainly not until after the clocks change should we get excited about wintry synoptics IMO

Just to add to my return to the thread post - I remember chionomaniac mentioned back in 2009 why that winter was so good (and why we saw such eye watering synoptics so early on in the season which of course materialised) is because during the autumn that year the stratosphere underwent repeated minor warmings and never really dramatically cooled then in December everything changed from what everyone on here remembers the very mild windy and wet November to the change to the Big Freeze that was in the papers and such like

I know we are only at the end of September and October just round the corner less than 2 days away but I wonder if chionomaniac would like to give us some early indications as to whether or not he thinks September this year is similar to back in 2009 or 2010? Would anyone perhaps less knowledgeable when it comes to the stratosphere and autumn patterns like to have a go at answering my question?

As for the weather this week it is looking drier than last week - rain towards the end of the week, which is uncertain at the moment but Thursday and Friday look the wettest days

First day that really felt like autumn with a northerly breeze bringing light showers across the Firth to us. A photo of the first wintry looking shower cloud. 006.thumb.JPG.9fdbf92c33604fd333790ada1f6c6b02.JPG

Curently 8c. The countryside is rapidly taking on the colours of autumn too.

Pleasant surprise down the field this afternoon.003.thumb.JPG.9377c8366b5692721e7779d09da8bc5d.JPGAfter two calves born in the early morning we had twins born in the late afternoon.

The nursery in the middle of the field is growing too.008.thumb.JPG.f37af3f09f14286f2895c7c5f16fb466.JPG

@Northernlights great pictures, is twins a rare thing?

Not that rare as around 5% of cows will have twins .Somtimes the use of a new bull will give an even higher percentage.

Slow down bigsnow a wee while til winter starts  "This year, astronomical winter begins on the 22nd  of December 2019 and ends on the 20th of March 2020."

"By the meteorological calendar, the first day of winter is always the 1st of December; ending on the 28th (or 29th during a Leap Year) of February. "

Got the first ten pages in - that is one hell of a thread!  (Will go through the other pages some other day)

Snow heaven regarding pictures, descriptions and pure euphoria!

Oh and some guy named MoreSnow keeps popping up - wonder what ever happened to him?
