Was surprised it was snowing at sea level earlier on today (not lying).

Then had to help get some lost motorbikers down from 1500ft up in the Galloway forest (about 15 miles South-East of Girvan, the real back of beyond), -1c and probably 6 inches of snow. Made for interesting driving conditions.

Wee dusting on the highest tops of the Pentlands this morning! Probably the most snow they've had on them all winter which really says it all!

Same here and despite a good inch on all surfaces and still piling down with snow at 22:00, I can't in all honesty call it a 'snow day' this morning. Snow on grass/fields etc but little elsewhere.

View from bedroom:

@Northernlights, I have a farming query for you. I noticed a few days ago that a nearby field of oilseed rape has partially flowered. I could swear it doesn't normally flower until April? The field isn't fully grown, it's perhaps two to four flowering stalks every square metre but the effect over the whole field is that it looks yellow. Does this type of early development have a negative impact on the yield at harvest later in the year especially if we are now going to have a colder, wet and windy period?

It just seemed out of place for the time of year but it might just be my lack of knowledge.

Yes most winter crops are a month ahead of normal in terms of growth. Woud be looking for these flowers to be pollinated by bees just now so if it turns cold/frosty then they won"t so these flowerheads will not produce a lot of seed but having said that oilseed rape has tremendous powers of recovery so will probably set more flowers in April. Another problem for winter wheat /barley is that fungal diseases started to appear on new growth in the last two weeks which would have needed controlling if the weather stayed warm and my agronomist was worried that he would have to convince farmers to spray five times for these diseases between now and July instead of the usual three or four times. Cold weather will halt these diseases.Severe bare frost would be the worst weather now for all crops including grass as growth was soft and easily damaged or killed.

Currently overcast and 5c

As I expected it remained as rain here last night, last 24 hours total 11.9 mm taking this month to 19.0 mm  already more than the whole of January which had 13.7 mm here, currently 10.4 C and mostly sunny with a few clouds. Looks like plenty of snow chances coming over the next few weeks just need a good alignment of any lows / fronts and enough colder air digging in and there could be some snowy surprises for quite a few of us, also wouldn't rule out some more stormy conditions.

The wee beasties are dying off due to pesticides, loss of habitat and climate change anyway. Please don't damn them any more, we need them for our own survival.

This weekend could get quite cold too, with widespread sleet and hail showers coupled with blustery winds.

Wednesday will feel very cold in the north-easterly winds with lashing rain.

On Thursday we could see the rain turning to snow at low levels as the low pressure moves east and pulls in colder air behind it.

Frickin cold here today, 4 deg C but wind chill had a bite, to get down to freezing here overnight, may have to scrape the car window in the morning, in texas, wow ❄️ on a more serious note, there was 24 people killed yesterday from a tornado in neighbouring Alabama, 650 miles away from where I am in Beaumont, which is like a tornado in Belgium when I'm in Fife, so although it's very far away, the storm systems start and move from much closer to here. Unbelievable devastation the videos I've seen on the weather chanel, don't think I will bother storm chasing after all . Hope ya'll get some snaw soon, things looking up

Very sleety stuff falling with the odd wet snaw flake mixed in. Slim pickings (much like won'ter overall this year), but the hills will look bonnie again. Currently 2.4C/1C.

Yes this one will have caught many un-noticed, the Met Office warning far too late. I was surprised at how low temperatures were in late afternoon, around 4 degrees, under very heavy precipitation - evaporative cooling in evidence. Very fine lines as well between rain and snow, here we just had rain.. a very interesting set up.

Hmm you could be right. Wet again yesterday, and this morning and early afternoon the M6 and M74 were like rivers as I headed north. Poor visibility and lots of traffic. (Even the car had a brief sulk for a while.)

Home now and it's clear but not quite frosty.

stormy charts continue to appear, certainly worth monitoring over the next week or so

This event reminds me of early Dec 2015 (I think) when a rain to snow event led to chaos in the Lothians. No real mention of it in the forecasts but @CatchMyDrift@ and I had been talking about the possibility as there was a slight hint on Euro4.

Great article and saved for future reference
