Let's stop remembering what happened a year ago, it's too painful. Seems like such a distant memory now.

The outlook is quite dry for the Lothians after some rain on Saturday, but the cooler winds should help clear away the pollution. The air quality has been bad over the past few days in Edinburgh. No snow on the horizon at low levels, until yesterday it seemed possible at times. Now the winds look predominantly western.

A shock to the system today with a maximum temperature of only 6.4c - compared to 15c yesterday.

Grey all day with fog for a time in the morning, just wish the clouds would clear now as there is quite a strong aurora ongoing.

We drove to Edinburgh yesterday with temp down to 3C in places on the A9 and some gloomy low cloud. Out on the lash near Easter Road last night and it was cold in the wee hours. Gosh there are some nice pubs round here! Just cold and grey this morning.

Winter 18/19 has to go down as one of the most remarkably non-remarkable winters I've ever experienced. 80mm of rain in 3 months, almost no snow, almost no weather of any type at all. I can't think of one event to remember the winter by and most winters have at least one memorable day.

Good summary of the winter, the only memorable thing for here was actually getting snow from the north and the mountains not hogging it all, although it is a poor winter when the only snow that has fallen is this > DSC_0130.thumb.JPG.518750ac6d47ac781b4ad6456e968941.JPG

wouldn't take much for spring to give more snow than winter for here.

Still the risk for something stormy over the next few weeks gens-9-1-192.thumb.png.c38b7733f88cfa8681ce5f7878708d31.png gens-9-1-264.thumb.png.8cb78c48970e6a88c9ea6e52d8b176e1.png gens-13-1-276.thumb.png.784df16c2e33137a2382614f375db0c6.png gens-18-1-300.thumb.png.45453d57c2346eed79d91e52c86d05e7.png gens-20-1-216.thumb.png.e39d65454b859b83e7513d22ad2ea837.png

9.5 C and cloudy here and very different to this time last year when over a foot of snow was lying.

well winter 2018/19 was a poor one IMO we certainly had some promising signs for colder weather to develop with strat events and MJO phase(s) at certain times but the final nail in the coffin appeared to happen after the failed easterly at the end of January, not sure of exact reasons why things didn't quite fall into place for us this winter but hopefully next winter will provide us with plenty of snow to enjoy and I just want to say as usual the Scotland regional has been the best place on the forum this winter, I have enjoyed every moment of will it / wont it snow and also the banter / pics from all of you in here has been brilliant :oldgood: :drinks:  giphy.gif

Further south today (yikes, down south of the border :shok:) but the gloomy clinging clag is just the same. The M6 is like a race track these days - again, we're all turning a blind eye to emissions and climate change. I'll keep banging on about this now cos I like to think my descendants will have an inhabitable planet.

After a grey morning, the sun appeared and it was quite comfortable and warm on the dog walk this afternoon. Temp around 9C and no wind. Fog/mist encroached again in the  late afternoon

Some of the shore birds are returning inland. A large flock of Curlew flew over today checking out the fields.

But the Oystercatchers ( along with the Eiders) were clinging like glue to their ever diminishing foggy sandbank at Montrose on a rising tide.

We are seeing some progress in terms of hybrid/electric cars and hopefully this technology will quickly improve.

The lorries, the buses, the taxis need to be changed if we’re to make a real difference.

Walked around the streets of Dublin and Edinburgh last couple days and can literally ‘taste’ the fumes.

Just popping in from the London and S.E. thread. Just have to say what a credit, Callum (Kirkcaldy Weather) is to your thread and the Forum, in general. I'm 63 now and Meteorology has been my hobby, since I was 10 years of age. I wished I'd had that amount of knowledge, at his tender age.

K/W, is also a very valued patron of my "Fantasy" Competitions, on the Sports Zone. His entries are always clear, concise and on time. I wish I could say the same, about all the entrants!!

I hope, all the snow lovers amongst you get a last "hurrah" from the white stuff, as we go through the next few weeks and a decent end to the Scottish Ski season.

Spent a fantastic two weeks in the Inverness area back in the late 1980's. My wife at the time, was suffering from the early stages Huntington's Disease, which she sadly died from in Dec.2008. but along with myself and our two children, still managed to walk to the top of Cairn Gorm. We also took the train from Inverness to Lochalsh, then the ferry on to Skye. We also had a lovely day in, Fort William.

Thanks for the memories, Scotland!!

Kind Regards, from south of the border,

Tom (SE12). :hi:

Just an aside to my post above. During our day in Fort William, got my Wife Jackie, to walk up Cow Hill (I think it's called??), to get  a better look at Ben Nevis. Poor Jackie promptly fell over on some waterlogged ground, her jeans were soaked through and very muddy, for the rest of the day.

Here is the lady in question, on our wedding day with our 6 month old son, Antony. Antony will be 38, on the 28th of this momth (Crikey, that makes me feel, ancient!!). Sadly, Antony is also very ill with Huntington's Disease, which is hereditary. But I'm so glad we had that lovely two weeks in Scotland, before my Wife became too ill!!

Oh, and days with snow falling / lying was the worst of the nine winters I've had up here. Just 8/8. The previous eight winters were 25/12, 18/10, 24/15, 24/11, 17/3, 31/32, 16/4 and 25/49 respectively.

The only notable weather event of the whole winter was the freezing rain in December.

Much love Tom, and many happy memories xxx

A final one from me, from way down south!! Yes mardatha the memories are still there, although they did vanish for a few months after I suffered a Haemorrhagic Stroke, in September 2015. Fortunately my long term memory has returned and with it those wonderful memories of that lovely 2 weeks, in Scotland. I think the time of year was late August. I'm sure the weather was very warm, in fact I'm sure the temperature hit 80f, in old money, on the day we went to Fort William!!

I don't think we saw much rain at all, during those two weeks. I can vividly remember, some lovely walks alongside the River Ness, on those balmy late Summer evenings.

Also remember the train journey up to Edinburgh's, Waverley Station from London's King Cross. We then changed trains for Inverness, taking us past Callum's (K/Weather's) beloved, Raith Rover's Stadium. Think we went through Perth, too. I can remember seeing the very destinctive shape of Schiehallion, in the distance. A lovely Scottish lady was joking with my "two", who by this time were getting a bit bored with the journey!! She told them to look out of the window and with luck, they might see some haggis, running around the hillsides. Evidently, she said, haggis only have one leg, which makes it easier for them to stay on the hills and not fall down. My "two", took it all in and spent the rest of the journey, very quietly looking out of the window.

We also spent a lovely afternoon, in Nairn. All four of us had a round of putting, next to the beach. Myself and my son took our Golf Clubs and we had a smashing round of Golf at Inverness Golf Club, one afternoon, while my Wife took our daughter to a park in Inverness. I can remember my daughter having her photo taken, sitting astride a statue of an Elephant. Is that statue still there?

As I stated, the weather was glorious but remember being troubled by your "notorious" midges.

One final photo of my son and daughter, on holiday in Naples, about 10 years ago, before my son became too ill to travel.

image.thumb.png.063a8a4ef9777fda1dbce778ee9b16c5.png

Thanks to you all, for allowing me to share those wonderful memories of Scotland with you and much thanks, for your very kind comments. We all fell in love with Scotland's stunning scenery.

This interloper will now head back South!! Looks like we might have to cope with a little wind tomorrow, for a change, as Storm Freya spins up to our N.W.

Hope you all enjoy your weekend.

Kind regards,

Tom (SE12).  :hi:

Very interesting I am surprised I managed a lower minimum than you, similar on the air frosts but slightly different on the rainfall, amazing the differences in a short distance between my location and yours, the winter was a strange one and arguably a forgettable one too apart from the record breaking warm temps late on.

The cold air sinks off the hill on those long clear nights, so we never get as cold as the surrounding areas. My car was showing -9C down in Kinross in that last week of January but only -3C up here. Similarly in December 2010 our lowest low was only -7C when everyone else was getting minus double digits. Cooler days though, generally speaking, so we have a much less extreme temperature range between minima and maxima.

Well various models have my location getting 8-16cms from 19h00 tomorrow. I wonder if it'll be enough to squeeze my seasonal snow day count into double figures. I'm almost smelling anticipation...!
