@Northernlights - just steady rain here earlier, now just grey and everything's very wet. I heard roads are bad round Beauly way, which has no altitude.

The only positive from todays conditions is that soil moisture reserves will be getting topped up..

Few pictures from this morning, about 16cms fell pretty widely over just a few hours, say from southern speyside up to the Inverness area and east in to moray. Probably approaching a foot at the house

Aye, caused a few problems on the A96 this morning, with it taking me nearly 2hrs to get into work (late for the first time this winter). Heavy snow was falling pretty much from Huntly through to Fochabers, especially around Keith, with temps hovering a degree either side of freezing. Traffic eventually ground to a halt just outside Fochabers, on the hill down to the roundabout if coming from Keith, and was stationary for around 30mins. Schools around Speyside, Keith and Huntly all closed, which means that the wife has a day off but I don't. Ironic since she's in Keith and I'd to get through Keith to get to Fochabers. Not that I'm bitter, honest. :whistling:

Looking outside now, well it's blue skies and broken cloud. Lying snow visibly melting here at least.

Take it from the feeling in an old crone's bones.............I've seen temps reaching 14c in many February's in the past for them only to revert.   Don't worry, the cold will return!:oldwink:

Still have half last nights snow still lying after a steady thaw from late morning but am seeing puddles skin up and start to freeze in shaded areas under blue skies. The frost we had before these snowfalls is still in the ground to a depth of about 3 inches and will  help to  preserve the   snow. Still looks frosty at night on my local forecast on here for the next couple of weeks so will probably keep snow lying in the woods or shaded areas. Currently 2.5c ,

Yes, looks like pretty average temperatures and rainfall for the next couple of weeks. Not the WIO with +10C temps and TM zonal from the SW some are shouting about, particularly in the cold hunt thread. Any way time will tell and we will see in the next few weeks if Winter is to have another bite.

4C here now and dropping at the moment from a rather average max of 6C in the late morning. Snow gone apart from a couple of icy bits and the odd piles where people cleared their drives. The kids round the corner managed to build a large snowman which was amazing as I doubt that we got more than  2cms here at the most.

This mild and wet spell seems very determined to last though, supported by a positive AO index over the coming days.

I hope we still get some sunny days, even on the east coast the weather is looking really bad over the next weekend (and probably next week too). Somehow when it isn't snow, the hills magically stop existing and rain comes pouring in from the west. Yet when it's snow, it's as if we have the Himalayas separating east from West Scotland

Colder this evening than last night and very slippery - underfoot, Matron! There's a patch of grass I use as a short-cut between here and the high street usually a few times a day and that's still hard as concrete as it gets little sun.

Too much wistful talk of beasts from the east will be treated with disdain chez HC - last winter was even more forgetful than this one at home for snow, although the cold started a lot earlier, obviously. A good late winter northerly outbreak is what we want, although I know northerlies are desperately poor for most folks' snow prospects. The recent northerly spells haven't quite had the oomph they used to... God I'm getting old.

Yet another beautiful clear morning. -1c and a heavy frost. Lovely stuff

yes for all its lack of snow the car seems to have been permanently frosted over this winter. This winter may well go down as the heart break one.... On Sunday the young lad 5 years old got all his snow gear on and the snow shovel and declared he was building an igloo.... was barely shovelling dor 5 mins before the snow stopped and started to melt... he played in it and stockpiled it until it pretty much all melted about 2 hours later.  It does not take much for kids to have a ball in snow but ee cant even get the 3 or 4cm for a day that would satisfy them.

So lots of frost but no snow of note so still praying for the one big snowfall to let kids be kids and me join them

Well, while that was a decent cauld spell for many, it was utterly pants snaw-wise for me here in the E. Borders.

Ye ken things are bad when you've nae snaw, yet even @101_North is daein a wee dance in some.

Anyway, when the last chance passed I went and booked another week in the Alps fir masel skiing. No way I'm ending this winter wioot another proper snaw fix. Totally broke now, but what the hell, you only live once.

Cauld and frosty this morning, then damp muck fir days tae come.

Widely -4C so thaw of lying snow stopped, at least temporarily. Just a bit of high cloud around and virtually windless going by the mainly static turbines.

For the sake of your sanity don't bother with the models for several days to a week.
