For all the told-you-so'ing, hair-pulling and toys thrown out of prams that I can imagine might be going on in weather forum model threads just now (don't know if it's true, but that's my guess), the season has been OK so far in Scotland. Limited snow for sure, but no house-wrecking storms, plenty of dry days with a bit more sunshine than usual, very few spells of incessant pishing down rain, and now that the evenings are just starting to get noticeably later, the promise of Spring just around the corner without the legacy of expensive autumn/winter repair bills. Silver linings and all that

There is a snow weather warning for the lothians tomorrow evening into Friday... But I can't see any precipitation even remotely close for that period and forecasts show clear skies? Am I missing something? No strong eastern current either... And the low is way down south

I’m not so sure mate - depends on location I suppose.

I want hunners of snow and severe gales! (not house wrecking though)

Winter has been pretty honking - it has only really arrived in the past two weeks. Up until then it was greyness and mild for weeks - everyday was like Groundhog Day! Pure pish! Plus I like my Spring to be snowy in all of March then I’ll happily take a lovely warm sunny day/week in April!

@edinburgh_1992 the flow will likely go into / from  the east as the low positions itself down in the south / sw of England (ideally a last minute slight shift north would be handy to give a stronger flow but beggars cant be choosers) 33-515UK.thumb.gif.9673a251ea9254a0ddd1b6e591047407.gif then slowly work toward a NE flow 39-515UK.thumb.gif.3bf40082bb4d4e84d96aba059b2b8c49.gifU48-21UK.thumb.gif.87dac31bd8d21e5a9b277ca0cc1c981f.gif  so as that video forecast I posted earlier showed it looks like the showers could focus on us Fifers first before the main area shifts toward Edinburgh and SE Scotland - I think it will be dependent on where those fronts that were showing on the fax charts set up - I think best case scenario would be to get them as close as possible to the east coast or possibly even coming into eastern areas helping increase the frequency and intensity of the showers further - my current mindset given other disappointments this winter is to expect either a shower or nothing and then maybe if we get lucky we might manage to get a covering if the showers / fronts behave as discussed  looks like a classic nowcasting situation with radar and lamppost watching the key.

looks like the fax charts have updated from the ones I posted earlier looks like there is now a trough due to some lower pressure out to the east in the north sea at midday tomorrow 20190130.1637.PPVE89.png which doesn't really move toward Scotland by midnight but you would imagine it would have showers forming in the north sea and the flow still looks like going toward the  east / north east  so still a chance for showers 20190130.1704.PPVG89.png

although midday Friday looks like an upgrade with better easterly flow and a trough aiming at the east coast 20190130.1704.PPVI89.png which works its way toward the NE by midnight with a NE flow starting again 20190130.1718.PPVJ89.png  so if that is correct possibly a slight postponement on the arrival of the best snow shower opportunity and instead maybe Friday looking good? things are changing quickly ATM so radar / lamppost watching seems best bet ❄️

Last night's snow in Edinburgh wasn't predicted, and even though there is barely a mm of it on the ground it lasted all day in places, even in the centre. I agree that we should just keep an eye on the radar over the coming days, but honestly I can't see the eastern flow being strong enough to bring in showers off the north sea

Car reading -4.5 already on way home. Temperature inversion in evidence over the snow with small pockets of mist and fog sitting in all the dips.

Nice to have some proper winter weather finally. Hopefully see a bit more over the course of the next month or so.

@Catacol are you a fellow kilter?

Noticed you mentioned as a child in Glasgow in the attached post.

Do you think Scotland will see a repeating pattern for February? (North Westerly)

Or maybe even an Easterly?

Really enjoy reading yer posts in the MOD thread so would be much appreciated to hear ones thoughts on the above!

Like what is happening in the US just now with the crazy low temperatures!

Does anyone know if the polar vortex has ever sunk over the UK? I would imagine it would be carnage with the mild waters that surround us?? Any thoughts

The only time I can remember off the top of my head during my life time ( I am 22) and years of weather model watching (since 2009) of seeing the PV or at least a section of it over the UK was during December 2010

Thoughts from  a minor snow event.

Yesterday's experience of driving on main/trunk roads was horrendous. From Dundee south to the border, I experienced along the line, wet snow, slush, snizzle, rain, fog, poor light.  Also, bad driving to the extent that some overtaking, from speeding lorries and some cars, regularly sprayed brown grit, slush etc over the windscreen which occluded vision and caused on one occasion a skid.

South of the border ( Tebay/Shap, M6 ) is for another thread.:shok:

Snow might be fine in your back garden or on the hills.

Always makes me nervous when folk head into the snowy lane to overtake. Who knows if they have winter tyres, and even that's no guarantee they'll stay on the road
