really are due to have a severe january looking at the stats.

With dec going to be extremely mild it’s a lot to ask january to flip to severe cold, but we have lots in our favour.

But it’s mid month before the big change is expected  so probably big contrasts in the cet between first half and 2nd half of month.

subzero cet for 2nd half .

Overall  2.8 c  60mm

Looking at the sudden stratospheric warming- likely to turn into a damp squib below with renewed North atlantic depressions from end 1st week of January. Possible short cold spell from east late January but nothing like last winter. My CET prediction of 5.2C, please with England/ Wales rainfall of 100 mm (high- pressure likely to be over Europe much of time).

With all due respect to Ian, his April to June forecast for this year was shall we say,  way out!

April, May generally below average and June around average was the predicition

That period was anything but average!

There has never been three 6c+ winter months in a row so let’s see if Jan can give us a chance of this

If you thought of this as a contest entry, it is not specific enough. So at the moment it remains just a comment.

Okay then - let's go for it - 0.4C and 47 mm...half a metre of snow for favoured parts of East Anglia!

I'll upwardly adjust both my guesses - to 4.4C and 82mm. Thanks.:santa-emoji:

A contrasting month I suspect - provided the effects of the SSW signal colder conditions in the latter part of the month. Based on this happening I am going to go for a close to average 3.9 degrees.

Conditions early on will be quite cold, probably becoming milder around 8/9 until mid month - though the north will be closer to average with some polar air in the mix, later on cold most likely possibly very cold.

Would love to go colder, but the effects of the SSW look like taking some time to take hold. Still I'm hopeful there will be some snow to talk about - unlike this December, which has been abysmal on the wintry stakes - one to throw in the rubbish bin - awful!
