If we could go back in time to 1970 what could we realistically do differently in order to improve today’s climate situation?

Hypothetical question of course, but given 40+ year’s head start on today (and hindsight!) does anyone think we could take actions to stabilise or improve the climate?

What was a hindrance to getting new energy sources in the 70's was the power of the oil companies who who would have thwarted progress away from using oil/petrol.  This would be the first thing to tackle and there would have to be more incentives of financing new technologies and energy alternatives and proving that they can work and are cost affective.

This isn't a thread for AGW denialists and their quick sarky opinions.

Sorry but this thread is better suited to the climate section. Closing this as it will inevitably go downhill.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
