Snowless winters in South East England between 1979-1987?

Recommended Posts

This period seemed to provide a cluster of winters with heavy snowfalls up and down the country, with the southeast of England also having decent snowy spells.

But, even during a cold phase, we still end up with milder winters. Which winters were deemed a disappointment during this period? For anyone who can remember them.

81/82 and 86/87 were the snowiest, and seem to be the standout winters.

Poorest ones I remember were 87/88, 88/89, 89/90.

Don’t recall the early 80s winters, apart from 81/82 for some reason.

Overall I think winter 84/85 was the most wintry in SE England. December brought fairly mild conditions turning cold at the tail end, however, Jan and much of Feb was consistently cold or very cold with lots of snow.

Winter 81/82 brought a cold snowy first half then fizzled.

Winter 86/87 didn't get going until early Jan, with an exceptional 2 week freezing snowy period, thereafter it stayed preety cold but not much snow.

Winter 82/83 brought a cold February

Winter 85/86 was the opposite of 81/82 and mild first half in the main, but cold and briefly snowy end of Dec and early Jan, second half of Jan became colder and we then had the sub-freezing Feb which brought lots of light snowfall but nothing significant.

The other winters were average, mild or very mild with not much snow, though Jan 84 away from the SE was cold with lots of snow, and Feb preety cold with further snow.

Ranking order:

84/85, 85/86, 81/82, 86/87, 82/83, 83/84, 79/80, 80/81, 87/88, 88/89
