Have to admit I'm seeing very little to be excited about currently in the models, Xmas day was the focal point a day or so back in the MOD thread with the chance of a northerly or north westerly and some chilly conditions but it looks like that's turning into more of a westerly (Pm air) on the ecm 12z which is being more progressive. The odd poster mentioning we might stand a chance of a frost on the big day lol!...talk about lowering the bar.

Ha it's like me trying to date, and I have given up!

This unusual warmth tonight is a bit weird.

The way the weather is at the moment , i'd be happy with a frost. Seems like snow is not on the cards until the middle of January , shame .

One of those back-to-front winter nights where the temperature slowly increased as the night went on. Started at 6C last evening and up to 9.8C at 08.00 this morning.

More rain on the way for later today with a cold front heading in our direction. I see the rainfall radar is showing the actual front as a squally line of heavier rainfall. The GFS wind gust charts show up the progress of that front nicely, as the winds switch from southerly to s'westerly as it passes through. Could be a brief spell of gusts of up to 40mph, clearing the Region by mid-night.

I never understand why people get so excited about a white Christmas, the chances f it are so small every year. can't remember the last time it was even freezing cold at Christmas.

Probably 2010 and that was down to inversion cold (slight fog/mist) and most of the snow had thawed...since then a big zilch!

Yes some over excitement on the MetO's 30 dayer!!...they haven't been that good so far at predicting cold this late Autumn/early Winter, the spell largely between mid-November to early December when they were predicting 'colder than average temperatures and short lived mild spells' over a number of updates never came to fruition...so maybe they're basing the latest updates on the impending SSW?

I’ve been holding off putting on our winter duvet because we both didn’t think it was warm enough, anyway the last patch of cold we had a few days ago I was so cold at night I decided it was going in now it’s to warm. I just wish it would stay cold or stay warm for longer than a week

Afternoon all. As has been said, a cracking long term MO update. Yes, could be wrong but they don’t usually use the dreaded “s” word so far out unless they’re fairly confident.

Would be great to get a proper cold spell in the heart of winter so that anything that falls and settles sticks around for a while!

Agree, @lawrenk haven’t seen anything as bullish as that since 2010. Likely to see tropospheric impacts early January it’s going to be a be a very interesting month could we strike gold?

saying we might have cold spells in january surely is akin to saying you might get heat in July?

Worth having a read of Tom’s “ Jan 87” thread he’s just started if you want to get the old juices flowing!

Might be because I was only 15 at the time but still the Mother of all cold/snowy weather for me, even though Feb 91 and Jan/Nov/Dec 10 were up there.
