Coldest minima winter 2018-2019 season

BBC mentioned a low of -11 degrees in Braemar I think last night which would make it the coldest min of the season so far..

This would be easily beaten by the end of the month if the output on offer by a number of models today comes to fruition. Hoping this thread will be quite active later next week, with some widespread mins below -10 degrees, and in cold spots below -15 degrees, certainly very plausible.

That -11c in Braemar might be worth a punt for coldest temp for winter 2018/19.

A long way to go yet but minimums above -11 have only set the record on 3 occasions in 110 years

I got a little carried away on Friday evening it seems in view of the model output at the time - alas the -11 degree figure unlikely to be under threat now next week - with no deep cold uppers arriving.

However, most likely will be under threat the following week.

Would be interested to note the date records for absolute lowest min over say the last 30 years, and how many times have this occurred in December, January or February or indeed November and March! I remember 2001 delivered very low minima in early March, down close to -20 degrees I think! - shows how cold conditions can be still in late February and early March. Last year was the same as well.

A bit of a misleading headline it is only the coldest 10 since 1960

Yes we might squeeze a -12 degrees in Highland Scotland tonight, thanks to snow cover, light winds, clear skies, and low dewpoints and thicknesses.

Apart from the mountain tops Loch Glascarnoch and Strathallan seem to be leading the way at the moment at around -6C

Strathallan at -9C is the coldest that I have seen so far this morning.

Was -10.2 the official coldest min then.. not quite as low as might have been expected.

Good chance the -12 degree will be breached in the not too distant future..

BBC have suggested -15 degrees in Highlands tonight, would be good to know current temps, and whether chance -12 at least will be breached making it the coldest night of the season so far. The next few nights look very cold over Grampian region.

Apart from the minima I wonder what the low max for today will be. Even here near the sea my current temp is -3.1C and I didn’t get below -6C last night. Inland it must be very cold still.

Areas of upper Deeside are forecast to be comfortably below -20C late this evening (screenshots from Met Office forecast map for 2000 and 2100). It's hit or miss whether these local cold pools will be near enough human habitation to be recorded, though - Braemar would still only be -13C at the time.
