An apt time I feel to start this annual thread, given we are quite likely to see the coldest minima figure of the new season so far tonight. Not sure what the minimum currently is, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a -6 degree min in western Highlands tonight, somewhere such as Tyndrum.

Please use this thread to record observations low minima this season - record your thoughts on who will record lowest min and what it will be.

I will go with Altnaharra UK lowest min, lets say -19 degrees.

England and Wales, Redesdale Camp -17 degrees.

Places like Altnaharra, Braemar, Loch Glascarnoch, Tulloch Bridge or even Benson has been known to be the coldest place. Get the snow on the ground and clear calm conditions is a recipe for very low temps.

Just to note Minus 20 deg has only been breached in one year in the last 17 and only 3 times in the last 30 years whereas the 10 years from 1978 had 8 such occasions

Also England has recorded the coldest night of the winter season on 7 occasions in the last 30 years including last winter.

Early January to produce a set up to challenge record cold.  -29c possible however I suspect daytime maxima may be beaten

I'll take a punt at -22C, at one of Altnaharra, Tulloch Bridge or Braemar...

Coldest in Scotland to be -26 C, in England and Wales, -21 C, and in Ireland -13 C. Not quite record cold but noteworthy.

CM, for Edmonton you might be thinking El Nino will lead to anomalous warmth but I think there can be some very cold periods too, as the central arctic has been cooling at a slightly faster than average pace. So watch for the odd -36 to -40 minimum there. I do agree that milder conditions will be prevalent though in that region. Interior of New England (Maine most likely), upstate NY and Quebec into northeastern ON may have some notable cold readings below -45 this winter. Hudson Bay looks set to freeze a month ahead of most recent years, that allows full arctic chill without residual cloud and warmth from mid-December onwards to lock into parts of eastern Canada.

That would be a nice place for it to be, I don't feel like it'll be somewhere like Altnaharra or Braemar.  But that's just how I feel, I'm honestly quite clueless.

Will keep resurrecting this thread throughout the winter - whenever there is potential for places to see there lowest min so far of the season. Forecasts are going for -7 degrees in some spots tonight, south midlands looks a prime spot. We shall see, but good that the current spell will at least deliver one widespread air frost - had it not, then it would go down as a very non-cold spell from a cold synoptic set up. Minimum temps have been preety mild.

Forgot to resurrect this thread yesterday - alas its been nearly six weeks with no activity, indicative of how poor things were during December. Alas pleased to be able to keep it alive again, with Braemar dropping down to -10.5 degrees early hours of this morning, making it the coldest min of the season so far, and we have a lot more of winter left.

Would be good to know lowest min in England so far this season. Think many places saw there coldest night of the season so far last night, and a few might see there coldest tonight.

Quite a cold temp for this innocuous current set up. Shows hope that if the pattern sets colder some serious minima might be achieved

Have only managed one night below -20c thus far this season..usually would have had a few daytime highs below -20c by now..but not even close yet.

Hoping this thread will come alive in the not too distant future - if the longer range forecasts are correct, deep snow cover, followed by light winds/ridge development at the end of January will enable deep cooling to occur at the surface..

It's been abysmal so far. We haven't dropped below -0.8C so far this Autumn and winter with a total of four slight air frosts. Combined, we've been below freezing less than 12hrs so far.

It's the half way point of winter tomorrow, hopefully it delivers something in the second half!

Poor winter so far. If memory serves, -8c this month.

Coldest for the UK this winter has been Braemar at -10.5c?

Scottish ski centres have had a miserable time, although that should improve today onwards.

still struggling to get below -20c here doesn't look like that will change in the next 2 weeks
