You will probably get a letter from DHL or whoever was used a week or say later with the fee to be charged. That's how it worked for me.

Glad to see Lucy is sorting you out with the missing sensor stick.

So have finally completed the final location move of my station in my garden. Spent the last month or so seeing what location was best for the anemometer, temperature array and the rain gauge. I believe I have found the best for my garden!

Temperature Gauge:

IMG_20190522_172720.thumb.jpg.c5a701358323ec80ec21e4e51d6f2ac0.jpg

I've mounted the gauge within a fairly cheap radiation screen (Link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B017ILZF6C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which gives the gauge more protection from sunlight, however is still not accurate in full sunshine with temperatures reaching 2-5c above the true reading. So I've opted for the only sunlight protection area within my garden, which sadly is a little sheltered. I plan on finding a more accurate and future option. Stats are near perfect during daytime hours to my nearest Met Office station, however due to the height, can be lower during night time hours.

Anemometer:

IMG_20190522_172704.thumb.jpg.967fb8208315c462634cd096edfe8932.jpg

Closely located is the anemometer. This was tested in many areas of my garden but I finally found a perfect spot. It is mounted on copper pole, which is attached to a scaffold pole to enable seasonal maintenance. The height of this is around 15m, which is above all surrounding trees (the ones in the foreground are around 40m away in a neighbouring garden. I plan on possibly adding a few more metres to the pole, as the tree to the left is one of those 'fast growers!'

Rain Gauge:

IMG_20190522_172731.thumb.jpg.1ab99f74acf8a9e6fd725271e3783c4f.jpg

Finally, the easiest to mount and find best placement for was the rain gauge. This is placed on top of a pergola with no obstructions nearby  My previous setup also had the rain gauge in this position, meaning complete open skies above to promote accurate measurements!

The station has been completely consistent for near 1.5 months now, which is incredible. The parts are very well built and I plan on purchasing some extra things from Ecowitt, including the air quality monitor and the soil moisture temperature.

I also plan to find a solution for the temperature issues. Does anyone have an suggestions? A full Stevenson screen is a option I've thought of, but pricey!

I'm having a few issues with mine. Signal is horrendous to my console. I wanted it in the lounge, however, I lose all readings to the outside temp/anemometer/soil moisture and PM sensor. There's only two thin walls in the way and around 40' away from the sensors. I've had to put it in my porch which is a pain, as I don't spend much time in it.

The anemometer has a dodgy/stretched seal around the solar/uv sensor. It's basically hanging out where the battery cover slides up and it won't stay in place. The PM sensor has been reading ridiculous levels in the past few nights. When I say ridiculous, it's basically saying not to go outside as it would result in health implications. I live in a rural area without any pollution issues. When I checked it against a sensor in Bournemouth, levels were reading low. AQI was 19, while mine was 265.

I have set the console (HP2551-C) display to come on at 07:30 and go off at 00:15, but it randomly switches off and on all day. It's done it about 20 times today alone.

Regarding the temperature sensor; I made my own screen, similar to what yours looks like, but bigger:

20180904_133853.thumb.jpg.7eb4963586f0d6d460eec43918a47d91.jpg 20180905_141238.thumb.jpg.973b5c842bf68cef4448ba388478fb4c.jpg

I have a PC fan at the bottom of it to, but I haven't needed to run it. It's in full sunlight for almost the full period on a clear day. It's always within 0.5°C of my Davis sensor which is about 18" above it. However, they both seem to record the same maximum temperatures at roughly the same time. The Davis sensor reacts a little slower than the offset. Humidity readings are pretty much identical as well. The UV readings are a bit over the top to be honest, but I don't really pay attention to them.

That is disappointing to hear @Mapantz. I've had zero issues with all of my equipment, which we appear to have the same rain, wind and temperature sensors. Possibly you might have some dodgey parts? I'd give Lucy an email (if you haven't done already) to raise your concerns. I bet she'd be happy to sort your issues! My Anemometer is solid, with none of the issues you reported.

I've just emailed Lucy myself asking for some pricing on the Air quality and moisture sensors, I hope there isn't issues with the systems.

That's a bloomin good home made screen! Do you mind if I ask how you came about building one? I'd be interested in something like this for mine, as the cheap amazon one is pretty flimsy too, can't see it lasting too many winters!

I hope you get the issues sorted bud, never good to hear!

@Mapantz Have the issues been sorted on your end?

Seems I spoke a little too soon with the station. I appear to have a data communication issue between my anemometer and the station/ecowitt.net. While its a small issue, it appears I have a few points in the day where no signal is received.

Currently in contact with Lucy about this issue, so hoping its something software required and not a physical issue with the station.

I also had a couple of missing readings, but I moved the console closer to where I have installed the weather station and - touch wood - much better.

I haven't upgraded my firmware yet - I see there was a new firmware released yesterday!  I just ordered a miniSD card to do that.  I noticed that using the WS View App from the appstore I could update the wifi firmware over the network and can now send to ecowitt.net - which I am now doing.  It's a shame you can't update the main console firmware that way too as it was easy as anything!

I noted that the HP2551 firmware update (1.4.6) contains some refinements that improve the radio reception on the console.

Might make a difference for some folks. Looks OK for me so far.

Finally have built a radiation shield for my temperature sensor for my station. Inspired by @Mapantz (Thanks for you sharing your photos!) and a useful guide on the internet, I have constructed one out of plant saucers.

I have 11 in total, basically constructed just like mapantz's one, but at a different placement; using over 60 bolts and 3 threaded poles, with a small plastic piece at the very bottom to house the sensor.

IMG_20190621_163443.thumb.jpg.2fdc9d7902411ebec0b7e6fa8e2f51c0.jpg

But I've already hit an issue, today is the first full day of testing and I'm already recording temperatures 4°C above local stations. I'm not sure if the placement is an issue, as there is airflow around, but maybe it is too limited underneath? Or possibly I haven't applied enough spray paint to make the station fully protective of the suns radiation heat?

Any suggestions would be welcome!

60 bolts or nuts? I presume that was to space the plates?

I used some nylon spacers for that. I think I only used 6 normal nuts and 6 capping nuts in total.

Yeah, used nuts for the spacers, one to hold the above plates and one for the below, so 2 for each, 3 times! Those nylon ones you used would of saved me a lot of time hahaha, but I enjoyed the project as it was an experiment for me!

Did you say you haven't been required to use the solar fan yet, as temps are pretty much spot on with your davis?

I've currently relocated mine temporarily to see if there's a air flow issue with my placement. Will get some photos later on to show the construction!

It's a PC PWM fan that I have wired up to an adaptor that I can switch between 3V, 6V, 9V and 12V. I switched it to 6V today funnily enough. Still probably not needed. Scored 21.2°C on the Ecowitt sensor and 21°C on the Davis. They react to temperatures differently, but the Ecowitt max temp is always within 0.5°C or less when compared with the Davis. The Ecowitt sensor is 18" below the Davis as well. I'm quite happy with that level of consistency when you look at the price point.

Have ordered the spacers you shared, as you can imagine, with the bolts it can look quite uneven between the saucers.

That's a clever idea. I may try this. Turned out where I had the sensor located on top of a peagola, there was a lot of heat radiating off the wood. So new place has been chosen and temperatures reduced slightly, but still not fully comparable. Glad to know the ecowitt sensor is pretty close to the more reputable Davis station!

So got an update for my station. The Anemometer signal appears now to be stable as has been for nearly 2 weeks. Lucy was very helpful and her technical team traced it down to a software error on my station. The newest update appears to have solved the issue.

I've finally completed the radiation screen. Had some issues with high temperatures, but some simple spacers and a slight move has solved all these issues  (thanks for the suggestion @Mapantz!).

Here are the near completed photos of my set up. I saw near, as I've just ordered some extra parts from Ecowitt, which should arrive next week!

Radiation screen construction and final location. Using spacers and nuts to secure the plant saucers. Used 10 sauces in total.

IMG_20190626_192500.thumb.jpg.b3912cfa8ed1703f0bff118a15262b56.jpg  IMG_20190626_192505.thumb.jpg.b32b960db875c9657f56704981a3671b.jpg  image.thumb.png.843e188e223221ba9affae57e7f396b7.png

Rain gauge and radiation screen. Both are located on top of a pergola at around 3 metres, with the radiation screen placed further out for optimal air flow. Constant battle with spider webs around the gauge!

Anemometer located on a 6m pole (up from 5 metres, previously). Few nearby obstructions, trees behind are over 40 metres away. Sadly roof location wasn't possible due to the difficult access and wireless element, making access necessary for battery replacements!

Overall, still very impressed with this station. Would certainly recommend if people are thinking of obtaining for replacement of an older system! Just for context, my older system a OS WMR200 was my main setup prior to this, temperatures and wind speeds are virtually identical!.

Really liking the davis screen setup you two have crafted. I would strongly suggest that you offer the design to FO/Ecowitt as it really should be part of the package and the one big weak spot with the current separate sensors offering!

If they don't want to make a variant themselves for mass production they could provide a PDF guide for others to do the same as yourselves.

Thanks! Really was some good info from Mapantz and some online sources.

And I agree, there is a lack of design with the temperature sensors. This was the one area I was shocked with, will tweet Ecowitt on twitter with my overall station and suggest this as a good option for future designs! (They like a review over on twitter by the way!)

Further update to my station. I have purchased the Moisture sensor and Pollution monitor as further additions to the setup. Currently have the moisture setup in a hanging basket for testing, pollution monitor is working well also!

You'll notice the rain-gauge now as bird spikes, this is not something I wanted to install (love seeing birds in my garden!) but it recently became a hot spot for birds to sit on and causing 'blockages'. Hopefully they just see this and ignore!

Update:

Today I finally got around to adding a fan to my radiation shield. The temperatures were not too far off a local Met Office site, however during the peak sunshine hours of the day, the temperature can really shoot up. So a fan was needed to assist with airflow within the shield.

I popped my designing head on and decided to fit a PC fan that was powered via solar. Not only to ease with access to the mains, but to provide a little more energy conservancy (even though the consumption would of been minimal!)

I bought a Solar powered pond pump off Amazon for around £7, with the intentions to use the solar power for the fan (45p from eBay) during peak sunlight. The output of the solar panel is 7v, meaning the fan has plenty of speed for purpose.

image.thumb.png.8814870a302480176e6d72cc1756cf3d.png   image.thumb.png.90ff4a6234dbfba29435ec2131bebfbb.png

Have been testing it this afternoon and the results have been instant, temperatures have been around 1-1.5°C lower than before, which made me realise how important this feature really is! Today was a partly cloudy day, however the fan was constantly running, and finally powered down around 6.30pm this evening as the sun turned to the west.

This is one of my favourite editions thus far and relatively cheap!

Did you get a gw-1000?

If you did you could power that from a USB power bank and move it around. By using the WS-View app on your phone you can see the signal quality.

You might be able to determine a source of interference or even if its just your console.

Its possible that Lucy is waiting for the new stand alone sensor variant to be ready and send that to you but I cant say anymore than that about it as I have been sworn to secrecy!

The GW-1000 Is in the room that I want the console to be in. No problems with that. If I put the console in there, after an hour, I lose all contact with the sensors. I had to move the GW-1000 from it's original place because it interferes with my Davis console.

Hi all, I gave up waiting for this to come into stock anywhere and ordered one direct through Lucy.

It arrived just fine but took a week to dispatch and a week to get here but no customs charges or vat yet (fingers crossed) it's all set up and working no problems so far.

Now the question to the folks who ordered the extra sensors, does the console talk direct to the sensors or the GW1000 gateway or maybe even syncing with the ecowitt website and getting the extra data that way,

does anybody know? thanks.

Correct my if I'm wrong, but for upload to Ecowitt.net I think you need the GW1000 with the extra sensors. I currently have the moisture and air quality sensors, they show up on the console but not online.

Hope that helps!

I still cannot get a signal on my console indoors. Lucy emailed me over a month ago saying that they were sending me new replacements for various items - not heard a word since!

This is strange Mapantz, I had the same issues, but was limited to my anemometer. Lucy sent through an update to my console, which fixed the issue.

Seems like yours could be a faulty unit?

Interesting to hear the rumours of a new unit?

I was just trying to figure out how everything meshes together. so your extra sensors talk direct to the console but that doesn't then upload the extra data.

I think that's sorted now but I find it strange the console wont upload all the data it has. That may be another email to support I bet that could be corrected with a firmware update.

I don't know if the console sends the extra data or not as I don't have it connected to WiFi.

It certainly doesn't have graphs for soil moisture or PM 2.5.
