Fresh falls yesterday mean that the snowline looks to be around 1400m, but today has sleet falling right now at 450m (!) with quite a dump expected at higher altitudes.

In Serre Chevalier at the moment. 15cm overnight at 1400m, 80cm at 2000m and a whopping 100cm at 2800m... Only supposed to have been rain at 1400m and below, so much better than the resort forecast was saying even yesterday afternoon. Awesome skiing this morning, although very poor visibility and v.high avalanche risk.

Think some resorts only a 30-50km away have had significantly more, we were on the trailing edge... But it's going to be a cracking bluebird day tomorrow

PlanetSKI today tweeting "What a day! Amazing for the end of April" with some great photos of conditions in Solden, Austria. There's still a surprising number of high level resorts currently open in the Alps if anyone fancies a late trip.

Yep, fresh snow falling down to 1000m over the last three days, giving a return to winter at moderate altitudes. There was (as is normal) nothing more than a few patches when I hiked in the forests up to ~1300m last weekend though, and this is very temporary unless you're at one of the highest resorts.

UPDATE on the historic Arctic front moving across Europe this weekend, May 3-6th

By SWE |  Mesoscale Discussion |  03 May 2019

A very intense Arctic front is moving south across Europe this weekend and is expected to bring unusually low temperatures, snow and dangerous frost into some vulnerable areas on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Some areas could experience morning temperatures well below zero, which would be potentially devastating for vineyards and agriculture. Overall, very cold days are expected across much of our continent through mid next week, while it remains mild and warm across the Iberian peninsula.

----

Some moderate snowfalls over the next 72 hours for some higher slopes, of which most have now closed for the season.

It certainly did Julian. Lots of snowy photos flying around taken at Val Thorens (2,300m) where ironically it was the last day of the season today (Sun 5th May). Some pics from last night and this morning:

Record May snowfall sees Mammoth ski resort in California announce it will remain open into August.

https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-mammoth-snowfall-record-20190524-story.html

The snowfall has already topped May 2015’s record of 28 inches, further adding to the enormous dump of powder that Mammoth has received. A total of 489 inches have accumulated at the main lodge, and 715 inches have been recorded at the summit. The ski resort’s current base depth is between 90 and 155 inches.

From recent viewing I think the Alps have had well over average snowfall this May,

Someone good with links can confirm this, but feel spring arrived very late in the Alps this year.

Esp on the higher slopes even the Edlewissespitze cam I normally view  its only really just been cleared this year for the summer.

You're right, I just had a quick look around the usual suspects, having reluctantly told myself to stop watching the winter webcams, and Edelweisspitze plus plenty of other cameras in that area are showing lots of snow still.

Not known for huge snowfalls at any time the area I go to but this the latest video from close by the start gate for the Lauberhorn downhill race

https://www.bergfex.com/jungfrau-grindelwald-wengen/webcams/c6563/

And the Mannlichen with work proceeding for the new fast cable car from Grund, the other arm will take folk up to the Eigerglatscher station at nearly 8500 ft

Well that is very strange.

The Edlewissespitze  web cab I have just been looking at as I often do.

Very surreal, the large amount of snow in the last month has left piles of snow everywhere, well late in the season.

There is a bike race finishing up the top, so there all in summer racing kit, looks like mid summer well it is June and surrounded by snow and sunny skies.

Just looks wrong, but beautiful.

Not too unusual at that height in the Alps for snow in depth to be around. Much the same in the Jungfrau region, the link shows Mannlichen with work on the new fast cable link still going ahead, the Lauberhorn start point link is not working for some reason but 2 days ago it showed snow half way up the start hut at 8,000 ft.

Morning John,

its just in recent years, I know you often get falls of snow for a couple of days, but this has been steady all the last few weeks.

It does make a lovely view with the strong sun and plenty of snow up there.

Lovely photo there.

More widespread snow possible over higher slopes this weekend.

"Expect up to 90 cm at the highest elevations of central Alps. Snowfall is expected across western, northern and central Alps down to approximately 2500 m."

Nice covering in the Alps again this morning.
Although forecast I think is for temps to rise quite quickly after today.
