Snow bomb - at least they're using text book meteorological terms! ;)

It's not a firework then? One heck of a Roman Candle?

I thought a snowbomb was a dessert sold in Iceland.

Why you even giving them the time? Just attention seeking.

That would maybe be relevant if these things weren't in the national  media and loads of people weren't already sharing and commenting on them. We've received plenty of questions about the stories already this year (as we do every year), so it's not like we're giving the stories any more attention than they already get.

I realize these tabloid sources try this every winter, they have to hit sooner or later. But I think the chances of a "decent winter" as most people who read net-weather would imagine that to mean, have increased somewhat over random (which is 80% chance of failure basically). Still far from a locked in outcome but I'm thinking this winter will be colder and snowier than most of the past forty winters and could rival 2009-10, comparing with the next winter would involve just one exceptional portion (late Nov and Dec in that case) so I wouldn't try to compare that one. What happened at the end of last winter is an encouraging sign that this sort of outcome is quite possible. We were setting records that were first established in late Feb and March of 1785, and the winter of 1785-86 was a reasonably good one.

However, any references to severe wintry conditions in the near future in the tabloids will likely verify better in central Europe than anywhere in Britain away from the higher parts of northeast Scotland perhaps.

I guess we can all expect a mild winter then. Most of the time the weather turns out to be the exact opposite of what the newspapers are suggesting.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
