brett was adamant that is wasnt safe to stay in Mexico City, then he drives directly towards it, getting caught when almost there.

Seems to have reached Cat 5 just after landfall

This is crazy how it escalated overnight. Those poor people who went to bed thinking it was a Cat 2. Wake up to a Cat 4 with very little time to get out - I mean it’s just after midday there. Crazy stuff.

NHC went with 155MpH and 919mb as of "0100 pm CDT" ... that's 1mph short of Cat 5. If they don't pointlessly upgrade that in their next update, I can only presume they'll take a closer look after the fact at some later date.

Watching these feeds of the wind as it hits really makes you admire the Hurricane Hunters who actually fly straight into it!

Any word from Brett Adair?

Michael now apparently the 3rd strongest to make US landfall, anyone know the 2 that were stronger?

I'm not saying it's not difficult or dangerous - it is...

but flying through a cat4 hurricane is probably a lot safer for them that a mission to investigate an invest and check for a low level circulation. In a hurricane, they go high and can kind of see what they're aiming for (if only on radar)... for an invest they'll go low, and it's a hell of a lot more difficult to find the center. Add into that the potential effects of turbulence on aircraft altitude, and I'd imagine it to be a bit "seat of your pants".

yeah, that live feed when they realised they were in big trouble is one of the most scary/captivating things i have ever seen

have to ask why he thought driving back up the coast road into the incoming eyewall was a good idea though ...

133KT SFMR confirmed (hence the upgrade).

138KT rain flagged. Possible they may upgrade post season.
