Can anyone shed any light on why this is getting virtually no media coverage? The BBC was all over Florence yet Michael doesn't get a single mention on their front page!

I'll give it a go.

I reckon that, with Florence, the warning was early, and the threat was clearer earlier. With Michael, I just don't think they've properly caught up and realised the implications.

That, or nobody much cares about the Panhandle for some reason.

It's not on the East Coast and isn't going to hit a major city..this part of the world is known as the Forgotten Coast Line apparently....easy to see why now

CNN are continuously covering now,

(observers saying saving grace is low tide landfall but range in NE gulf is insignificant anyway with <3ft of datum?)

I get that it's not as densely populated...but the SPC slight risk associated with Michael covers a population of 7 million, so it's not exactly sparse. Besides, more populated areas inland could get 200mm or so of rain over the coming days.

When you have a president who talks about fake media , conservative commentators who talk about a deep government global warming conspiracy overstating hurricanes and a population who voted 70-80% for Trump , messages of impending disaster are probably falling on deaf ears

2 things..

Firstly it is Conservative commentators eg Alex Jones that talk of the conspiracy not Trump

Secondly this is not a true Trump tweet, it is well known that there two types of Trump tweets, those that he makes and those that his staff make...the difference is in the language used..it is thought that the language that Trump tweets resonates with his supporters ie he uses "their" language.

I should add im not taking any side in this, just trying to explain why the authorities have such a hard time in getting people to evacuate and heed the warnings

Raw dvorak has increased to 7.4 showing that the system is still strongly intensifying.

This is the highest dvorak of the year and equates to a mid cat 5.

Banding and ring analysis on ir is incredible

Winds are not at this yet.

NOAA are just doing another pass.

Cat 4 in October is not that rare, remember that October is still regarded as peak season.

Gonzales 14 - Cat 4

Joaquin 15 (my fav of the last few years) - Cat 5

Matthew 16 - Cat 5

Show me a CAT4 , in October, impacting the Pan handle S.B.!

This is what is being talked about!!!

The records go back to 1851 so plenty of chance eh?

Might need to edit the title to Cat 4 or 5.

Michael has been on steroids and got very powerful, very quickly

That is a mean wind speed the diagram below shows how wind speed changes with height in the eyewall

JLF_Fig1.jpg

there have been some well documented cases where hurricanes make landfall as one category but a higher one at the top of a high rise building. Indeed the building codes in Hurricane prone areas account for this phenomenon
