The dog

I've got one of those. Heavy shower passing through now, he's dancing by the back door to go out

No storms here today, everything missed to the N as the winds weren't Nly enough to push the showers this far S in the region. A lot drier than yesterday!

Hopefully that's  it for the soggy conditions for a little while.

Althought I don't understand why I am in a yellow warning for rain tomorrow when the same MET office forecast says that it is going to be dry all day...

Horrid cold grey day, that's about it.  Sadly the cold "blip" forecast at the beginning of September was anything but, rather the commencement of autumn in all its nastiness.

The three month period May to July 2018 was truely exceptional for NW England and North Wales, the closest I can think of coming to it in my life time would be May to July 1989 and even then it wasn't that close.

I did a "summer" index for that period and it came in at around 296 which is better than every summer measured by the index since 1900 except 1995 and 1976

Summer 1976: 301

Summer 1995: 298

May to July 2018: 296

The one thing that stands out more than anything for me from that period were the sunshine levels, they were phenomenal! Looking at the Met Office regional figures for the NW England and North Wales area

May 2018: 256.5hrs  sunniest May ever

June 2018: 257.1hrs 4th sunniest June ever

July 2018: 250.1hrs: 4th sunniest July ever

Total of 763.7hrs  or 8.3 hrs of sunshine per day

Sunniest ever season for the area is summer 1976 with a total of 681.5hrs or 7.41hrs of sunshine per day.

May to July 2018 recorded 82.2hrs more sunshine than during summer 1976.

Sunshine totals for May-July 2018

Ronaldsway: 754hrs

Shap Fell: 689.2hrs

RAF Valley: 779.9.hrs

Aberardon: 801.9hrs

Maximum temperatures are another standout for that period.

May 2018: 17.3°C  2nd warmest ever May

June 2018: 20.3°C 2nd warmest ever June

July 2018: 22.3°C 3rd warmest ever July

The maximum temperature for May to July 2018 average at just under 20.0°C. They were only 5 summers since 1929 warmer than this in terms of maximum temperatures.

Rainfall totals are interesting, only summers 1976 and 1995 were drier than May to July 2018 for summers since 1929.

May to July 2018 will linger long in the memory: hours of sunshine, land getting parched and cracked, the smoke coming off the Pennines and Winter Hill, the glorious sunsets almost every day. It will take something for a future May to July period to surpass it.

After two weeks of temperatures pushing 40c, high humidity and dodging biblical showers, it was nice to get back from Florida to conditions where a good brisk walk this morning was actually enjoyable.

it felt bloody cold sat in the house last night though although the American obsession with fully cranked up air conditioning  gets you used to it.

You timed your return well... we had deluges of rain the previous two days and only a few days ago the GFS was hinting at a stormy wet Sunday today but thankfully we've struck lucky as the worst of the wet weather is further south.... we shouldn't even get too many of those showers in the west reaching eastern areas of the region today, so all in a good Sunday in store...and a quiet week ahead.

Passable day with long sunny periods, but that frigid Northerly was something I could do without when pedalling to my local leisure centre.  Even worse coming back home as I'd spent quite a while in a heated swimming pool so that icy blast felt even colder.

First grass and air frost this morning.

The roofs were white along with the lawns.

Cold night last night and very clear so I saw the full moon.  Min. temp. here 4.0C - I live in a minor UHI so the nearby countryside would be lower, possibly some ground frost.  Currently fine with some bits of Sc.
