oh my god, heaviest snow i ever seen, settling instantly

Easing off now, didn't really amount to any great total beyond a covering though, looking at the radar I'm on northern flank so should be heavier for you.  Came out of nowhere that. Hours of moderate snow struggling to settle and then a whiteout covering pretty much everything in ten - fifteen minutes. British weather. If only it had been like that all afternoon - we'd be buried.

Perfectly set up for tonight now if we get decent precipitation from any showers. Base layer - low temps. Anything that falls will be snow and could be quite a bit.

Heavy snow once again in Macclesfield, and things turning white again. Sticking very nicely now. Roads are slushy, could be horrificly slippery tomorrow.

You're under the dark red spot on the radar by the looks of it, hopefully a few more of those tonight, ever so slightly north of your location  . Enjoy it.

It's been icy rain, some sleet here, but when you thin it will turn, it doesn't. It is what it is. Later if we get showers they will almost certainly be of snow. There is, however a breeze of the sea, and while that keeps up, it probably wont get too cold overnight.

Snow had stopped here, but a further heavy shower has arrived. Are these showers the remnants of the back edge of the cold front or the start of the evening/overnight shower activity? There do seem to be developments in the Irish Sea.

Most model output suggests shower activity starting properly at 3am or so.

Ok, cheers. Metoffice video forecast indicates showers moving in from around early evening, but really clumping together in the early hours.

Will be a night for keeping an eye on the radar. EURO4 due shortly which will be out last real model hint before the actual event.

After that, it's up to the Gods.

With a pressure profile like this, somewhere is bound to get lucky.

500 MB temperatures are a good measure of how vigorous convection is. At the moment these are steady around -34°C. After 6 pm they start to drop in earnest, and by 9 pm they reach -39°C. I expect cells to start exploding after 6 PM.

There is a dry line coming in behind the band, this is going to have positive effect with regard to the dewpoints which, for some, have been just the wrong side of marginal today. Even as I speak and as DSP has said, those plummeting dew points and incoming showers are only going to deliver one thing, snow.
