A little snow shower in progress here.

None of us should expect much convective activity tonight - nothing is forecast bar a couple of isolated showers.

Edit - looking at the radar, coastal areas may catch a few showers over the next couple of hours

Found some images of the winter of 1940

photos took on the main route from Horwich to Bolton ( top of Chorley old road) near scout road. About 5 mins drive from my house. About 900 feet above sea level

Edit

first photo is on the road from Bolton to westhoughton.

My parents always said that the snowstorm in 1940 possibly January but not sure was heavier here than anything in either 47 or 63.

a hell of a statement to make given the mythical like status those 2 have reached but aparantly the level snow was over 3 feet deep.

big question is would it have warranted a Met O amber warning or being up here, would a yellow have been enough

  • Chilly with an increasing risk of frost

Once Monday's band of rain fades, the next few days will be drier. However, it will feel cool, even cold, in the breeze or under gloomy skies, with an increasing risk of frost. Read the full update here

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming. Week Ahead: Cool but largely dry until later in the week, when low pressure returns

We keep a chilly northerly flow going through much of the coming week, especially noticeable in the east. Cloud and rain spreading south Monday, but after that, most places largely dry until later in the week, when it looks to turn more showery. Read the full update here
