 Actual hail or graupel/ice pellets?

yes, actual hail.. quite strong battering the window.. and of course the wind has picked up. No lightning seen yet, though i heard some crackles on the radio before

Just been outside and what we have is thawing ...

North westerlies now as bad as south westerlies in winter for me.

Agreed, only a decent easterly seems to offer anything more than transient slush these days.

Polar Lows have been documented to make it down the Irish sea in the past.. indeed although a rare event, Polar Lows have hit the western side of NW England.. but it is rare. The truth is though, if it were going to hit us, we'd have some idea by now..

I remember one in hitting nw England in 91 i think.  I was a milk boy but started work at half three when it was clear.

We had about 4" fall in a couple of hrs here in Bingley west yorks.

Watched the weather next day and it said a developing polar low was the cause.

Cool. Yes, that’s how I heard it. I always have the old Radio on on nights like this.

I know we obviously remember Feb 1991 for its deep snow but I’m sure we also had a heavy fall with a polar low in December 1990 although I may be wrong! I was a student in London and remember traveling back for Christmas in deep snow and then being snowed in London in February.

its already thawing, but that is the nature of things, it's still above 0C, but the dewpoint is -2C

We've had worse winters up to this point snowfall and especially cold wise - but so far its been a rather poor affair on these fronts. However, we are only at the mid-point, February and March can pack a mighty cold snowy punch, and in many recent winters - noticeably so over the last 25 years or so, mid Feb - mid March has delivered some of the coldest and snowiest conditions (last year included), other years include 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2013 and 2018 - why is this, because the atlantic loses its power by then and northerlies and easterlies become more likely. So yes, I can understand the dissappointment at this juncture, especially given how devoid the first half of the winter was for snow and cold, but there is alot of winter left!

A clear sky here now, an earlier hail shower has left a now frozen covering on my car and favoured surfaces, tomorrow morning will be an interesting and icy trip to work.

From an IMBY point of view I like the look of that line of showers coming in between the IOM and Walney Island.

only problem is that the first one which the radar showed directly above me ended up giving me nothing but I live in hope

It seems more like Rochdale. Hard to tell as the outer parts of the shower sometimes flourish later and the main core dies.

There are some larger showers in the Irish sea heading a bit north of here, maybe a chance for for Liverpool etc.
