79 was special.

Must have been over a foot of snow here. Seemed to last for ages.

We had snow on the ground from new year into mid March and much of the time it was drifted as high as the top of the downstairs windows.

just a shame it was before digital cameras and phones, the photos would have been amazing.

You have hit the nail on the head - once you experience dumpings like Jan 87 and Feb 91 (They are once in a generation events) and i was privilaged to witness 2 of them within 4 years, everything since just pales into insignificance.

Funny how I always remember as the 90's being particularly barren in terms of 'cold' & 'snowy' winters...but there will always be one year/winter in a decade that will give something to remember...hence your username.  I remember 87 and a few more in the 80's as a kid growing up...but maybe I had other things on my mind during the 90's....ahem.  Dec 2010 still my benchmark to measure all against for me.  a) more into weather, b) two occasions of foot falls of snow, that stayed on the ground during the coldest December on record.  Can't beat it.

Current temp here is a balmy 6 c. Not looking good even for sleet tomorrow for me.

Mind you this could be chaos with only a couple of inches, if it rains and washes the salt away then snows before they re-grit............     There was an event in Birmingham late Jan 2004 - 1 inch and a half of snow, took just as long to get home from work as the 11 inches in Feb 1991, what happened is it was a snow to rain to snow event - 5 hours to travel 5 miles.

Tried to get up to Rivington pike & Winter Hill mast but it was impossible.

My old man worked in Belmont and he said the snow was pilled up 5 feet high in places.

I remember watching the weather forecast on the BBC and they mentioned that the Manchester area could receive up to 10 inches of snow.

Was a remarkable experience.

Just like I said, the radar is turning pink as it leaves the Wigan area

It’s still 0C/-3C at Manchester Airport, so south Manchester could see snow from this big blob.

Although not loving the reports from Wigan - seems hard work to get snow at the moment, even if the parameters seem perfect on paper.

I’ll expect rain then any snow tonight is an unexpected surprise.

ha... knowing my luck it will be a 10% probability of it not happening.  I'm not the highest part of Oldham by a long shot.

Yes. i have thought about North Yorkshire (nothing to sell though) but even that would not have done the trick this winter.

Scotland seems to be best place if you want Snow, they seem to get some decent storms in recent years as well

Sleet mix just turned to snow, didn't expect it, certainly not the settling variety but if it survives again bodes well for further inland/more altitude. Edit: textbook sleet actually - pretty disgusting where you get a burst of flakes then rain but I suppose at least it is wintry.

Out with the dog. We had a snow shower an hour ago which is still on the floor so the blob looks good

Not bad to be getting wintry PPN then, certainly feels far too cold here for it to fall as anything other than snow.
