It’s bizarre. I’d understand it if the precipitation was coming in FROM the east.

Must be fairly complex physics involved.

Never seems to be a problem when it’s rain involved - only snow!

2013 was a real pain in the backside for this.

I remember an occasion in the early 1990s when we had hardly any rain and I recall John Kettley mentioning this in a broadcast when he showed a rainfall amounts table and pointing out Manchester only had 1mm. I'm trying to recall the occasion.

Yes, not quite sure how it can only affect one precipitation type- as you say, it doesn't stop the rain. I certainly have no explanation for it.

I read an explanation once and i can't remember what the it was lol..

But it is genuine - as long as we get a few cm tomorrow i'm non fussed about thur if i'm honest.

I’m guessing it must happen with rain too, would make no sense for it not to.

We’ve definitely had a right soaking when the wind has been from the SE - in fact I noticed an event recently.

Maybe it depends on the exact wind vector and wind-speed.

I would love a scientific report on why this happens with a south east wind.  I mean the peaks are not exactly the Alps.

Nice to see showers already spilling in off the Irish sea...looks to be a brief affair before hopefully the main event tomorrow.  Hard to imagine it falling as rain here, it's felt frigid outside today but dewpoints have risen slightly in past hour.... -4 now instead of -7.  Air temps still at zero.

Would be nice to see the ECM correct to a less elongated low, slightly further N on tomorrow morning's update. We do still get precipitation up to Manchester but it's lighter and patchier.

21st/22nd May 1994, that was it. Barton air show that Sunday looked like it was not going to be good weatherwise but the weather held off.

I maybe wrong but i wouldn't be suprised if it dropped further south- the mean might reveal more shortly..

ICON and GEM have gone N from where they were earlier, the ECM looks the furthest S of the main models at the moment- and it's not all about the actual track of the low either, it's about what form it takes as it crosses the UK. A flat low will do us no good.

GEM position is ideal

Can you dig out a classic snow event that actually makes it here pushing up from the SW, that would be good to see and to prove miracles do happen.

I  remember the day of the zeebrugge disaster  woke up to 6 inches of snow and it had all melted by midday.  Think that came up from the south west
