Beware the Manchester SE’ly rain shadow. It’s rare to get settling snow in Greater Manchester or North Cheshire when the wind is coming from the SE, even when the precipitation is coming up from the SW.

You’ll need a physicist to explain why, but it just doesn’t happen.

The rest of the region could do ok though, and Tuesday/Tuesday night looking good for all right now.

Yep worth noting for sure as it can be a real snow spoiler locally - can't remember whether winds were from the SE for this particular event but I remember the 18th Jan 2013 frontal snow event that brought 5-10 cm snow here in South Cheshire, the North Midlands and even a covering to Merseyside only for the main band of snow to grind to a halt just south of Manchester giving Gtr Manchester, Lancs and North Cheshire (North of Macclesfield) nothing more than a dusting and a few light flurries in the wind.

Yep wind was from the SE. It always is ahead of a southerly tracking low. I got 3 inches that day.

Overall I did well in 2013 with a couple of good snow events in the January and a few lighter coverings in the Feb & March but it was 22nd/23rd March of that year which was the real killer blow with the strong SE wind. The mysterious diamond shape hole opened up on the radar and then it's game over. It was the most disappointing let down I can remember with just a very light covering on favoured surfaces. Meanwhile places like the A595 in Cumbria which rarely gets snow compared to other parts of the county had cars buried in it as seen on the link.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-21910079

Yes remember the snow shield well for the March 2013 event.  That's why I'm not pinning any hopes for the Thursday low.... it will a painful radar watch as it crawls up this end....if it even get's here.  Hope Tuesday delivers a bit of falling snow....there's a good chance it could stick around with temperatures being quite low.
